This one of my faaavorite Thai restaurants to eat at in Indianapolis! The food is delicious and it is a great place to go if you want a quick but nice meal. When you walk in the doors you are greeted by a friendly server who will direct you to a table (they don't have booths or tables for 2, only tables set for 4 along the walls and bigger setups in the center of the room). The atmosphere and surroundings are almost formal but very inviting and relaxed at the same time. The lights are dimmed to add to the ambience and the room is decorated with some beautiful wall hangings, statues and a few nice plants that all make you feel like you are in Thailand. We sat down and right away the server came to take our drink orders and had those out within 5 minutes. After looking through the menu a few minutes to decide what to order (the dish names are all in Thai, with the ingredients in English) we gave our order and then waited. Each meal comes with a choice of a small side salad with greens, carrots, purple onions and peanut dressing, or silver noodle or Tom Yum soup. My dad and I both ordered the salad which came very quickly. It was very cool, like the lettuce had just come out of the refrigerator. I thought that was nice because it is much better to have crisp, cool lettuce than warm, limp lettuce. The dressing was tasty and really made the salad interesting. I think it wouldn't hurt to serve the dressing on the side because there is so much that a lot of it ends up sinking to the bottom of the plate and going to waste. Other than that it was delicious as usual. Our food came out quickly and was hot and fresh. I had the Basil Fried Rice and my dad had a chicken dish with rice, green beans and peppers, which he said was delicious. My fried rice was delicious too! It had red and green bell peppers, beef, rice, carrot slices, and some herbs. The flavor was very rich and strong. A warning for anyone who might not care for much spice: they ask you what spice level you would like your food cooked at and I believe the levels are mild, medium, hot and very hot. I am adventurous and I like spice so I usually request medium. Having not been here in a while I did not remember just how each spice level tasted. Well, medium spice is about equivalent to Brushfire barbecue sauce at City BBQ...VERY hot! I still could feel some of the heat and my sinuses felt pretty clear about half an hour after getting home haha. Our server came around every few minutes and refilled my water glass, although she never filled my dad's until the very end! Even though he was also struggling and had an empty glass she must have thought he was handling the spice better than I was...? The water did really help. I definitely will order the Basil Fried Rice again because although it was very spicy the flavor was so good! Along with the salad/soup choice every meal also comes with a slice of homemade rum cake for dessert! We always look forward to this part of the meal because it is so moist and full of flavor. We do have to be careful though because the first time we ate here the rum was VERY strong, both in flavor and in alcohol effect, and both my dad and I started feeling drowsy before we even got home! It was like the rum had just been poured over the top of the cake after it was baked. We remind each other of that every time we go back and get a good laugh out of it. There was no intoxication this time...just yummy, fresh rum flavored dessert. This place always delivers on flavor, quality, atmosphere and service. I highly recommend it for a unique, satisfying dining experience. Oh, they also have a buffet every Thursday evening! The first Thursday is vegetarian and all other Thursdays are the regular buffet. Go get some...
Read moreI ordered Pad Kee Mao and spring rolls. The spring rolls were good. The service was poor. My water was empty for 15 minutes before it was refilled. When my entree finally arrived, it was full of raw onions. They had maybe been in the wok for 30 seconds. They were not cooked. I eat at other Thai places in Indy frequently and have never encountered raw onions in my Pad Kee Mao. I told the server I didn't want it. She insisted on having it recooked. While it was getting recooked I went to the restroom and while I was waiting, she burst in the bathroom hallway obviously looking for me like she assumed I was running out on the bill. I tried the second dish of Pad Kee Mao. Still disgusting raw onion. They tried to tell me it was supposed to be raw. I went up front and asked to check out. I told them I didn't want my entree because it was not good. The owner came out at that point and asked what was wrong. She offered to make the dish without onions. That's not the point. They should be cooked. It's the worst Pad Kee Mao I ever tasted. She insisted on voiding my ticket and they wouldn't let me pay for the spring rolls, which I wasn't happy about - I ate them and liked them - I should pay. Anyways, poor service and poorly cooked food means I will stick with Thai Orchid (my usual place) in the future. The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because the spring rolls were good. Edit: for anyone that may wonder why I didn't just pick out the raw onions - I tried that first but the entire dish tasted like raw, hot white onions and it...
Read moreThis place was closed for a few months and recently reopened. First time walking in, I noticed that it's not a big place and the decoration is very simple and old, not fancy like some places. It was quiet and quaint and would have been great for conversation. I got the lunch special Thai noodle soup with chicken and opted for medium spicy and a side salad instead of soup since I already had soup in my noodle. The side salad, while small in portion compared to other Thai restaurants, was tasty with a sweet ginger based dressing. The dressing was way too sweet for me but I can see others liking it. The egg roll that came with the lunch special was vegetarian and bland, which was disappointing at first bite but when combined with the sweet salad dressing, it became quite amazing. While the noodle soup bowl was smaller in size, it was packed to the brim with noodles, I came in hungry and was satiated at the end of the meal. The soup was tangy and spicy and The dish could have used more vegetables other than the occasional bean sprouts, and cilantro and onions for garnish. The inclusion of fish balls, ground pork, peanut on top of the protein of choice was a stroke of genius and gave this dish additional layering that was quite enjoyable. Beware that the spicy scale here is legitimate and I felt the medium spiciness burn and I would opt for mild in future visits. Highly recommended and looking forward to trying the stir fries, dry noodles and...
