Honestly, we've been really disappointed in the food around Indy since moving here. We have explored countless places that have been well-reviewed and have been massively disappointed, for one reason or another.
HotBoys is one of the exceptions.
It was our first time and we were walked through the menu and the hand-holding was great. A lot of places generally just point to broad sections of the food, but we got a play-by-play of every item (and that's with a regular/buddy waiting behind us, gauging by the greeting they received afterwards). So that was a major green flag.
The price is a bit of a premium, but when you're eating out, you expect that and for the money, the portions were spot on. You get a generous amount of food for the price, but any more and you might begin to question the value - so it definitely hits the sweet spot in that regard.
We went as a group and ordered two #1's (the chicken sandwich) and an order of the Loaded Fries.
The food came out quickly and it was delicious. And that's an understatement. The chicken was very crispy, but not to the point it was burnt, and the meat was tender and juicy. A perfect fry all around. The fries were a nice crinkle cut with a dusting of seasoning. And the sauce is killer. Everything compliments one another really well.
As I said, we went as a group, with a friend from out of town and we didn't know what to expect, but it delivered. We will happily return on our own, but will be sure to spread the love with other friends and family when they come to visit.
My advice: if you're "heat sensitive," just get Mild. I got the "Mild Plus" and that was the upper limit for me - right on the cusp of being too hot and meal ruining for my standards, so I'm glad it took me to the edge and didn't push me over it! I forget what the guy said (I think the owner?), but I think he said something like the Mild had a cayenne dry rub, so even Mild will have some kick, the Mild Plus begins to bring some of that heat, with habanero I believe it was, so if you're really not into very spicy food, you'll most likely be content with Mild. (Yes, I know...
Read moreOk, so I'm not a chicken person. It's not that I dislike chicken. I just think it's boring. It's not something I'm ever going to go out of my way to get, so every time my friend suggested this place when we were trying to decide on food, we'd shut him down. Like it was almost a joke. I get it. It's good, but it's chicken. Who cares. Until we finally tried it. It's not just good. It's stupid. Even the vegetarian in the group went crazy over the veggie sammich. It's STUPID good. I will often split that with her and I'm not a vegetarian. It's SO good. And their fries! Omg!! If you haven't tried this place, do it now. Just a quick warning. They don't play around with spice. I love me some spicy food, but THEY. DON'T. PLAY. So if you like spicy, start with training wheels. I know that sounds silly, but I'm serious. I like heat, but I tend to stick with southern because this is for real. I got the spicy one time with my son who also LOVES him some spicy chicken and it is melt your face off kind of heat. Do what you want to do because you're going to anyway, but you've been warned. Atmosphere is really cool, but if you're looking for a quiet place to chat, maybe get it to go. Service has always been great. I think every time I go there, I order from the pretty lady with red hair and she's always wonderful even when I'm not. Really...
Read moreI always try to find good in every restaurant that I go to! And for the most part I usually can but not this time! I was looking for some decent fried chicken and I didn't find it here! They serve it in a styrofoam box on top of a piece of bread to soak up the excess grease and hot sauce. The sides come in plastic dishes which is fine but the two that I got the coleslaw and the macaroni and cheese were not good. The macaroni and cheese sauce was gritty the macaroni was undercooked and the coleslaw had little to no dressing on it whatsoever! The chicken was nothing more than a vessel to soak up hot sauce. I peeled the breading off to be able to get to the chicken below and it just didn't help. The outside of the building is extravagantly painted you can't miss it and I had to duck to keep from hitting my head through all the stuff that was hanging down from the ceiling which also questions as to how they clean all of that! I just happen to be driving by and thought I would go into try the place unfortunately I will not be back. Just after I had gotten there and got my food there was a bunch of construction workers from across the street come in to get something to eat so obviously there are people that like their food it's...
