In search of good Thai food closer to home than Thai Spice on the south side, we set our sights on Siam Square. No option to order online so I called in the order of 1 spring rolls, 1 crab rangoon, chicken pad Thai medium & chicken panang curry medium. First impressions: much better commute than Thai Spice (20 min vs 60 min) so I was very hopeful that the food would be as good so I don’t have to go south again. I picked up the food easily but first impressions where “the food is much lighter to carry than Thai Spice…” which is a bummer because they cost about the same, maybe slightly cheaper. Food review: spring rolls had good flavor and were crispy. Crab Rangoon had much more “crabby” flavor than what I’m used to at Fei Da on the west side. Much more crab flavor which was nice. Pad Thai was much lighter than Thai Spice by one pound (I brought numbers, people. Thai Spice weighs in at 2.6#. Siam Square is an even 1.5#) A disappointment because I’m used to more food for the same price. The flavors weren’t as good as Thai Spice. They reminded me more of Egg Roll #1’s pad thai in Beech Grove. Panang Curry was not a large portion either and I laughed at the rice portion (compared to literally anywhere else who packs their rice boxes) Siam Square’s was fluffy and only went 3/4 to top of box. I packed it down and it was just half a box of rice….funny, I thought. For such a cheap ingredient, why not pack the box like all the other restaurants anywhere else, ever? Flavors of the Panang curry were good though but I’m afraid it’s not enough to justify every other point I’ve made. Alas, I will continue to drive the 1 hr for Thai Spice because they’re just. that. good. For the same price. But if I’m in a pinch, have no transportation, and happen to be in FS? I’d settle for Siam Square because it wasn’t a total flop (hence...
Read moreI am changing my review from 5 to 1 today. I have been one of biggest fan follower of Siam Square and had always recommended people to try this place at least once. But I went back to Siam Square today probably after almost a year since I moved far. The places look and feel has changed to a more fast food type restaurant. Little disappointed after the way I have seen in last 8-9 years. You first need to order at the counter and then the food will be served to you at your table. Since you have paid first, there is little motivation in your server or staff to serve you better for a tip as an appreciation. Our entree was delivered first with starter while the soup was delivered last, that too after reminding them after 30 minutes. The bowls provided were dirty. After showing the dirty bowl, they just took it and never gave us a replacement clean bowl. I ordered Thai Hot spicy level for my food, but was delivered the most non-spicy food I can imagine at a Thai restaurant. And last the quality of Roti Roll in desert has gone bad too. Looks like the ownership has changed as I could not see most of previous staffs and the owner lady that used to be there always.
Altogether it was very disappointing that I have lost an option where I would love to come for dining in future. I wish things could go back to earlier. Sorry Siam Square that I had to write so much negative after being your fan...
Read moreI’ve always enjoyed the food at Siam square and would consider it one of the better Thai places in the Indy metro area.
Was a bit taken aback by the behavior of the owner though.
In many Thai restaurants, miso soup is brought right before the entree, so I didn’t think twice after we received a bowl of it before we received our appetizer and entrees.
Right after it was brought out, the owner came up and asked if I had ordered it. I said that I had thought it was complimentary. He snarled at me and made some off color remark and made me and my guest extremely uncomfortable. It was apparently supposed to go to another table.
A few minutes later he berated the staff member, who brought it out to us, in the middle of the restaurant and immediately the noise in the restaurant dimmed. He proceeded to go to the kitchen, slamming something on the point-of-service table next to the kitchen. You could then hear him yelling at staff.
I have never been in a position where I wanted to tip a lot to the staff who provided the amazing meal but at the same time exclude the owner and not reward him for such behavior.
I really believe that the behavior should be assessed and some appreciation should be given to the people who provide such a good dining experience. Without them, there would be no...
