We live about an hour north of Jackson but regularly make trips there either for business events or a day of shopping.
In all our years going to Jackson, I'd venture to say that we've encountered a restaurant that rivals just how good Tulum is.
During our last trip to town, we were looking for something different for lunch. My wife asked a friend for suggestions, and I Googled them. Both recommended Tulum Fresh Mexican Grill, so we decided to try it.
It took us a minute to realize that instead of being instantly seated, you walk up to the counter and order. Since it was our first time in, one of the friendly staff members suggested we grab a couple of menus at the counter, seat ourselves, and look over what they offered before going up to order. While we sat, she brought two buckets of chips and directed us towards their salsa bar. They had quite a few varieties to choose from, along with other accouterments.
Once we decided what to get, we placed our lunch order at the counter. Initially, I thought the prices were a little high for lunch, but that changed once our order was quickly delivered from the kitchen.
I ordered three of their crispy-rolled tacos with shredded beef. They came with a side of rice and beans.
We've been to our share of Mexican restaurants over the years, but Tulum sets itself apart from the rest. The service was fantastic, the staff were extremely polite and helpful, and the food was, to quote my wife, "Some of the best food I've ever had in Jackson."
If you're the type of person who likes to try something a little different or loves the taste of good Mexican food, this is the place to go.
I have a feeling Tulum Fresh Mexican Grill will become a regular stop on our...
Read moreI will start of by saying it caught us off guard when we found that we had to order at the counter. That style of dining is not really my thing. That said there were a few high points. First off the place is very clean, nicely decorated and the staff is Very Friendly. The atmosphere was comfortable and well appointed.
We both had Cheese Enchiladas with Rice and Beans I ordered a Guacamole and a Tamale that was as big as my head, and I have a big head lol. The Guacamole was very bland needed lime, garlic, and a bit of Jalapeno. Both of our Enchiladas were so tough they had to cut them with a knife, the beans and rice were less than warm. The Tamale was great well cooked and seasoned.
Pam had a beer and it was frosty cold and I had a margarita that was great. The thing that surprised me was that the manager took our plates away and never asked how everything was and I watched him take our mostly uneaten food back to the kitchen and never looked at what was not eaten, I saw the same the same thing happen a a few other tables. After 40 plus years in the restaurant business I can say it is unlikely this place will get better unless they start asking the...
Read moreI’ve been a regular customer at Tulum Fresh Mexican Grill for quite some time. On what should’ve been a routine visit to place an order for my child, I experienced treatment that left me feeling deeply uncomfortable and unwelcome.
When I approached the counter, the owner, Daryl Fortner, appeared noticeably cold and indifferent. I was wearing a Tennessee shirt and hat with orange details — and I could clearly sense a shift in his energy and attitude the moment he looked at what I was wearing. I remained polite and respectful, but his demeanor was uninviting and dismissive.
I later reached out to management to share what happened, hoping it would be addressed professionally. While the manager acknowledged I was a regular customer, no resolution or assurance was offered.
I’m sharing this experience because I believe that all customers should feel welcome, respected, and treated fairly, regardless of race or appearance. This situation has happened more than once, and I’m speaking out because I believe in fairness, equity, and accountability...
