I google review almost every place I go. As someone who grew up in a small family business, I understand the struggles and stress that goes into it, so I want to highlight anything I enjoyed about the place. If I don't like a place, I just won't leave a review.
This is the first time I've left a 1 start review. I've been going to Greenlight since it opened in the neighborhood several years ago. I remember talking to the owner at the bar and his hopes of making the place a popular korean karaoke place on the north side. As they have gotten more popular, room bookings have become much more frustrating. Their website has a form you can fill out, but they don't want you to use it anymore. They have a phone number listed to call to make reservations on their website, but they don't answer it, saying that is a text only phone number. When you do text them, they don't always receive or respond to them. When they send text or email, they are not always received by you, the customer.
When they lost my sister's reservation last year I did not change my review, as they apologized for the error and was able to accommodate us. I made a reservation for my birthday party weeks in advance and got a confirmation text that did not include any information needing a credit card to secure the reservation. I had reached out to them a week before the reservation to ask if I could add some people, and they responded with a yes, but again no mention of needing a credit card to secure the room. Had they done that on the first confirmation text, or even when I had reached out to them a second time, I would have immediately put down a card. However when I got there with my birthday party, they said they messaged me the day of asking for a card and I showed them our text chain and my email inbox/spam box which showed I did not receive any communication from them.
Their communication has caused multiple issues in the past, but the lost birthday booking this year is the end of my patronage. If they had put the information about requiring a credit card at booking on their website, I would have taken responsibility. But between the first confirmation, my second reaching out, and lack of transparency on their website, I can no longer trust this business and wanted to share...
Read moreGreenlight Korean Pub & Karaoke is a much needed alternative to the area when other private room places are jam-packed. Making a reservation is really easy and flexible, when our group arrived we were brought right to our room and introduced how to use the equipment (be aware the devices and songbook are Korean first with english songs mixed but is pretty common and not unusual). We were immediately served our drinks and after a little testing figured out how to use the device and we were on our way singing and partying it up. Our server / bartender was very friendly and helpful.
The music selection is really good, better than other private room places I've been to. Also they feature really great Korean appetizers! Lots of great and delicious options.
One of the highlights of the night was when they lit shots on fire and dumped them into glasses for us (I'm not so good as describing it but it was great, everyone loved it).
The only downside is that the room we were in got pretty warm despite having a fan on -- not sure if they crank the AC in summer but if they don't it'd be super balmy in there. Another caveat is that if you are looking for an after-party bar there aren't too many options nearby, but nothing public transit or a Lyft couldn't solve.
Regardless this place is really great and deserves more attention! Green Light Korean Pub & Karaoke a nice gem and is a great alternative when other private room karaoke bars are crammed...
Read moretl;dr - you'll be disappointed if you're used to actual booth karaoke.
When I hear that a place is a booth karaoke place, I expect that they have a karaoke machine. This place did not offer this despite how there was a karaoke machine and karaoke booklets in the room. Instead, we were forced to cast YouTube videos from our phones.
This meant that 1) we had no ability to change the pitch of our songs, 2) if we chose English songs, there were no videos accompanying our songs, and 3) as a group that had zero people with YouYube Premium, we were blasted with 30 second ads in between almost every song.
Maybe this is the norm for booth karaoke in the states...? If so, I'm sorry that this is the only experience that you know of. I've gone to two or three other booth karaoke place in the US, and they've had actual karaoke machines, so guess I've been lucky?
Anyhow, given the lack of karaoke machine and the rather cold service as mentioned by several other reviews, I would not recommend coming here for booth karaoke. Food was...
