A belated post - a month ago (mid November on a Tuesday) I was in the Portage Park area solo around brunch time and was craving a chill place for some quiet time, but also some unique drink and food - Junebug Café was absolutely perfect for this.

This café is quiet, cozy, and intimate. I enjoyed an amazing seasonal Spiced Maple Latte and a seriously delicious (and filling!) southern-style buttermilk biscuit sandwich with cheddar, green onion, bacon, and egg, sitting near the door to people watch and see the snow flakes (maybe the first of the season in the area).

First off, this is a lovely area with several options - there's a Culver's and Eggsperience Irving Park (with free parking) is straight across the street (which I was seriously debating on) - but being solo I ultimately decided on a southern-style unique little café for the taste and quiet time. It met my needs and expectations, for sure.

All around, excellent experience. The girls working were so sweet and friendly, and the food and coffee was excellent and actually a really good value. I marked this as a place to come again specifically for coffee and the beignets (which I really wanted, but couldn't manage alone!)

This seems like the perfect chill café place for solo or...

Walked in to grab something to go. I can't believe I paid $12 for an empanada. It was fine, but I would never willingly pay $12 for a single empanada. I asked if meat pies were bigger and the girl behind the counter said yes, giving me justification in buying one along with a biscuit with butter and jelly. They gave me my stale biscuit with no butter and a shitty packet of jelly you get at a diner or McDonald's. If you're charging $12 for an empanada and $7 for a single stale biscuit, you can make homemade jam that costs nothing to make and is extremely easy to do. My 6 year old daughter made some last weekend. She hates cooking yet she made really good jam because it's so easy a 6 year old can do it. I can't even eat my stale biscuit now because they didn't butter it or give me the butter I ordered and I refuse to eat that shitty jelly so now I'm hangry because the single meat empanada that's seasoned with only garlic and salt isn't enough! Ugh, I'm so sick of places like this. Price gouging just because you're marketing to the yuppies you hope to walk in and not bat an eye to that $12 unseasoned empanada you could instead buy 4 of at a Puerto Rican place that's a million times better. I'm sure the beignets are good, but I'm never...

Nice cozy, small place across from Culver's. Me and my wife got a large cup of Dark Matter coffee, a large rice krispie, and an order of beignets. The beignets are better than the ones at Stan's Donuts and even better than ones I've had in New Orleans-- they were awesome. The staff was attentive and friendly. The have common coffee shop menu staples (Red Eye, Americano, etc) and a limited food menu (I'm guessing that it may grow) that includes beignets, a jambalaya meal, and gumbo. The theme is New Orleans with decor on the walls. There's limited seating (4 stools near entrance, and about 4 sets of tables and chairs) but it was NOT crowded even though it was Sunday. They have Dark Matter bagged coffee to-go, and there is a bar with all the coffee accessories you might need. They have non-dairy milks, flavor syrups, etc. The beignets are cooked fresh so you have to wait about 10 minutes. It was refreshing to see a nice new place on this grungy block and felt like we were in some other north side neighborhood. We'll definitely...

Fake Cajun and terrible tasting! Had high hopes but this place was BAD!!! Save your tastebuds from this bland experience and go to Popeyes for better taste. And Popeyes is not good so that should tell you a lot. The gumbo had a sour taste to it and was very oily. There was little flavor of true gumbo in this dish. Red beans and rice is my favorite, always try it at every restaurant that has it. Look at the pic. It looks like something you get at Chipotle. Very little beans compared to rice and they were hard. This dish should be creamy and melt in your mouth. The flavor should be subtle but warm and pleasing. They forgot to put in the flavoring, like no taste what so ever. We added the $6 up charge for Cajun chicken to the red beans and rice, big mistake. This was not blackened but slapped on a grill till it was tough and sprinkled with some McCormick Cajun seasoning. I really wish the owners would of taken the time to actually taste their own dishes to realize they need ALOT of work.

I decided to try Junebug on a whim after passing by it quite often and it was 100% worth the detour. I ended up trying a corn muffin, a meat pie, and 3 beignets along with a mocha. I wish I had ordered more of the meat pies since they were so good! It was so flavorful and seasoned perfectly. The little sauce complimented it amazingly. The corn muffin went well with the meat pie, not too overwhelming but not lacking in flavor. It was my first time having beignets as well and they did not hold off on the powdered sugar which was excellent. The beignets went great with my mocha and I got to enjoy them outside on a table nearby and enjoy the changing leaves. One of those cafes that has great food options and great coffee as well. It's super great to have some Lousiana styled cooking or grab a nice cup of coffee in the area. I highly recommend a visit if you're in Old Irving Park or Portage Park, it is definitely worth stopping in.
