Avondale was rated by Timeout Magazine as one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world in 2022 and on the list of places to try in Avondale, is Taqueria Mazamitla.
I visited here recently with a few friends. The shop is small, yet spacious. There are plenty of tables, yet it never felt crowded. People are constantly walking in to pick up orders to-go and those who dine in inhale their meals. No one sticks around long; that's a good thing.
The service was quick, we must have waited no more than 10 minutes for our food. If there was one downside in the night, it was that the salsa is served in a tiny cup and each time we asked for more it was simply forgotten. We never did receive a refill. This alone would not have been disappointing, if the salsa they serve was average. But it's not. The salsa is excellent - according to my partner, the best salsa she remembers having. In a table for four, you need to be quick to get your fair share. Fortunately, they sell their salsa to-go, for $8 you take home a 32oz cup of the good stuff.
Most of us ordered tacos. These are very reasonably priced. Most tacos are $3 - $4, an excellent deal for the quality of tacos served. If you want a side of refried beans and yellow rice, opt for the taco platter. On the menu you'll see a two taco platter and a three taco platter for $12.50, but there doesn't seem to be a limit to the size of the platter you can get. I went for four and in hindsight should've ordered the five taco dish.
I'm a sucker for the pastor (pork) and really enjoyed them here. I also tried the goat taco (birria) and was pleasantly surprised - if I had ordered a fifth, it would've probably been another one of these. The vegetable taco was fine, the sour cream and avocado was a nice touch, but nothing to write home about.
I left convinced the tacos were the thing to get here. One of us ordered the cheese enchiladas, which I got to try, and they weren't great.
In the end, we all left satisfied. We walked two blocks west to wash down the dinner with beers at...
Read moreI always drive by this restaurant, and had been wanting to stop by... well, (lol)... I was craving birria that day, so I went in, The place needs a make over bad, but I didn't mind as I usually love small hole in the wall type restaurants, it seemed I was getting something very authentic. I went up to the cashier/order take her. I tried to explain that it was my first time here, and asked about different menu items I could not locate (the menu is on the wall). This lady looked liked she had been wronged, very salty disposition, curt and seemed in a hurry to get my order over and done with. I, of course ordered a plate of birria and some tacos. The birria is served with lots of "consome", but here is what I did not like... Inside the birria, there was a sliver, really a sliver of goat meat and some goat meat fat, I was expecting at least enough to fill two tacos, this was NOT the case. The "consome" itself is very good and flavorful, but it was a miserable meat portion. I was very surprised. The steak tacos were small and flavorless. I did see someone dining there with a very nice portioned of a "guisado" which "looked" good, but unable to vouch for that. I think they were out, and sold me the scraps, because if this is the way it is served, then, wow just wow. I am now in search of a better place on the north...

When you arrive, you get chips and salsa. But the chips were not the best, and the salsa with the chips was cold, which means it wasn't fresh. The service is prompt and friendly. I got two tacos de Asada and two Al pastor. The pastor was better with more flavor and a softer meat. Asada lacked flavor and was chewy. The taco salsas (green and red) were excellent and plentiful.
The restaurant is very casual, and the tables are very close to each other. Customers require a mask to get service.
The price was high for the casual place with no parking. $16.50 for a Mexican Coca-Cola and four small tacos. With a tip, it was $20.
My suggestion is to organize the restaurant to make more room. Lower the prices and buy better quality meat for the Asada. Also, Improve the chips and salsa. They must be fresh. Taqueria Mazamitla has the best green...
