I'd heard that this place had the best burgers in Jersey City. I've lived near this place for 10 years as a transplant and was always afraid to go inside. I love to know the old culture of a city and am interested in history so I was excited when I was invited by a friend to grab some food and drinks. In COVID times, the bar has installed a cozy and accommodating outdoor areas for food, drinks and watching sports. The service was prompt and accessible with the younger staff being attentive and available and sometimes humorous . Others have said that the burgers take forever and they do take FOREVER, but it is worth the wait (~45 min, come to relax and not in a hurry) Burgers were a succulent mound of well seasoned meat, toppings (extra $) and a fluffy bun with condiments.
With that said, my fears were validated when I finally visited. POC need not come. Put this in the "Green Book" as a place to avoid not because of the staff or the tavern itself (though the glass of beer that I received, I'm sure was not a coincidence) The staff was either happy or indifferent of our presence, yet the service from them was great but the patronage let us know that we weren't welcome (the well known stare) Every time any member of our party walked to use the bathroom, get some supplied water and bug spray or walk out of the gates to have a smoke, the record would scratch, conversations stopped mid-sentence and we were looked at as an escaped wild lion (we were all in jeans and shirts) While I would certainly patronize this place again, take out would be...
Read moreNew Park Tavern had been on my list to try ever since I moved to Jersey City and heard of their burgers. It turned out to be one of the darkest bars I've been in, which helped our condition; except for the door being open to the back patio, the light came from some dim lamps. The bartender was nice albeit aloof, but then again it was easily understandable why. Poor bastard works the bar and the grill. Think your job sucks? Think about doing it along with working a grill. No bueno. Subsequently it took him awhile to get everything cooked with him serving people at the bar in between. The burger, while overcooked, was moist and flavorful. There was a bit of seasoning on it but not too much. The beef was decent quality and had a good meat-to-fat ratio. It reminded me of the kind of burger my mom makes. The bun was decent too along with the greasy-ass bacon. Even the frozen fries were pretty good. This wasn't fancy but it was good and it allowed me to function for the rest of the day, even if it wasn't the world beating burger some make it out to be. This meal hit the spot at the time, I just wish the hype hadn't been there. A place like this does best when the expectations are low or...
Read moreCame here with some of my friends last week and we had a great meal. We got burgers, fries and some other meats. Now all 3 of my friends that came r Allison, bob, and Matt. They all work in an office and sit at a cubical all day. They definitely appreciate me taking them for dinner. We got here and it’s definitely a dive bar atmosphere I’m not used to that but it was a fun time. My friends gave it bad at home and me taking them out for dinner gave them time to vent. Allison said that her 14 yr old son crashed her car because she didn’t give him gas money, bob said that his wife tried to strangle him with her boot laces because he forgot to put soap in the washer and the clothes stunk, and Matt said that his husband did not pleasure him in bed as he had hoped for. Then all the sudden as we were eating Allison decided it would be a lovely time to start her period. She bled all over the chair so me , Matt and bob started to laugh and bully her. The staff was very helpful to her and we ended up just leaving after we ate. We were gonna stay for some beers but we decided we wanted to go home. Definitely come check this place out it’s...
