Sugartown Bakery Cafe — Restaurant in Jersey City

Very unfortunate to have to write this review. I purchased a small birthday cake for my partner’s 30th Birthday. Cake looked beautiful, but in tasting our first slice we realized that the filling/cream had spoiled.

I put almost the entire cake back in the fridge and called the store on the Sunday of a long weekend. No answer (understandably). I left a voicemail asking for a call back on Tuesday and explained the cake was bad and was looking for a partial refund with me returning the cake (cover their cost, but give me part of the $75 I paid). Didn’t receive a call back on Tuesday, so I called again and didn’t get an answer.

After calling and speaking with Sam and the other owner on Wednesday, I was told that there was nothing that could be done and that I should have called the direct number I received when I placed the order.

Not only was I told that I was the problem, but that there’s no possible way that they could have made a mistake. It’s horrible thinking that I paid $75 for a cake I could not eat for a special occasion and kept in my fridge thinking it would help to get it addressed.

It’s even worse knowing that I called multiple times to try and have it rectified, but was met with frustration/blame and told never to return to the store when they were the ones at fault.

Pretty cake, it just was not what I was asking for. I sent them a photo and was specific about the size and how I wanted the font of the writing. It looks nothing like what I sent them. It was supposed to be a very small cake for only 6 people. The guy said 7 inch heart shaped and I said that was perfect. When I went to pick it up, it was much larger than what we agreed on. This was inconvenient for me because I was in charge of bringing the cake to the venue along with other things so now I had to carry a large box that I was not prepared for. I also specifically said not to make the letters and numbers skinny. I wanted the font thick like I showed them in the picture. So when I got home I had to improvise and scrape the writing off and replace it with some cake decorations I found on Amazon. I wish I took a before photo. They said they couldn’t correct it because the lady that does the cakes already left for the day. Why allow the bakers to leave before customers pick up the product?? Especially if the cake looks nothing like the reference I gave them.

SugarTown is hands down one of the best bakeries I’ve ever visited—if not the best. This family-owned gem creates the most incredible pastries, and their dedication to quality is evident in every bite. I recently placed a last-minute order with Sam, just a day before I needed a custom cake, and despite the short notice and complexity of the design, they delivered beyond my expectations.

The cake was absolutely delicious—moist, flavorful, and beautifully crafted. My entire family couldn’t stop raving about it. What truly impressed me was witnessing the team in action. While working remotely, I arrived early at the bakery and had the chance to watch them make my cake from scratch. Their skill, passion, and attention to detail were remarkable.
