Loved Razza! Is it the best pizza in NYC when it's across the river in a different state (NJ)? I'll just say it's fantastic, including the bread and butter. It's located across the Hudson river on the gritty streets of Jersey City, just beyond the glow of the big apple. Razza stands there, in its understated grace. A single establishment, surrounded by the clamor of a city that is so frequently overshadowed by its colossal neighbor.
Razza, this little pizza joint in Jersey City isn't what you'd expect. On any given night, its patrons will proclaim it - with fiery, unwavering conviction - the best pizza in New York City. That's quite a title for a place not even located in New York. But then again, I've long believed that the best stories, the most authentic flavors, aren’t always found in the expected places.
The ambience here is rustic and warm, with a palpable sense of passion flowing through the air - from the open kitchen, where hands skillfully craft each pie, to the tables of patrons who savor every bite. But, let's get to the heart of it, shall we? The pizza.
Taking a bite of their signature pie is like tasting the history of pizza. The crust - light, airy, and a little tangy - is the bedrock of this experience. It’s an homage to the age-old traditions of bread-making. Then there’s the sauce, so vividly red and bursting with a freshness that can only come from tomatoes treated with reverence. And the cheese, oh, the cheese. It’s a dance of dairy on your tongue, with just the right pull and melt.
It's about more than just ingredients at Razza; it's about a philosophy. Respect for the craft. Respect for the ingredient. Respect for the journey from field to plate. It's not about being flashy or over the top; it's about being genuine.
As I finish my slice and take a sip of my drink, I'm left contemplating. While the fierce debates over the "best" will never end, Razza doesn't concern itself with these superficial titles. They're just here, on this side of the river, doing what they love. And doing it damn well.
So is Razza the best pizza in New York City? Perhaps that's not the right question. Maybe it's about understanding that sometimes, the best things aren't where we always look. They're just across the river, waiting to be discovered. So yes, it's worth taking the PATH or an Uber to eat at one of the best pizza...
Read moreStarted with the bread and butter tasting, which we loved, someone explains the types of butters and it’s served with delicious warm homemade bread that is very light. Some how this wasn’t overly filling.
Then we had the burrata and heirloom tomato salad— best tomatoes I have had all year and in a very long time. The way they were dressed was perfection and they outshined the burrata. I’d eat this every day if I could.
The meatballs were my least favorite of our three appetizers, that said the sauce and ricotta were tasty and the meat was very good and soft in texture. You have to eat eat bite with all ingredients, to me, the meatball on their own were bland. Would love if this was served with a thin garlic crostini or croutons. Pine nuts? Looking for a crunch.
Pizza was underwhelming. Maybe we ordered the wrong ones? I wanted to see how they did a classic and then we got the Guanci. Everything was just tossed on and just not thoughtful. Look at my photo and how the basil and sauce look, look at how the parmigiano is dropped down in the second. I expect a place like this and for a small $25 pizza to take its time putting together my pizza. I mean they are sourcing butter from all over… I was confused. Some slices had no sauce or watery sauce— for the start of the meal this was actually disappointing since its their thing. We came for the pizza, but left satisfied because of appetizers. If we just had the pizza I would be leaving 2 stars.
The dough was great but wish that where the topping sat wasn’t so thin, I like thin crust and I get the type of pizza this is, BUT it made the pizza wet— so thats a technical thing for me. And it was really unappetizing in its look.
Service is EXCELLENT.
I’d return for a hope of a better experience on the pizza. Off night? Wrong pizza maker? I don’t think busy is an excuse they are certainly well staffed.
Hot take: The pizza is over rated BUT the appetizers...
