We have been loyal patrons of Don Juan's for over 10 years. We've typically gone there 3-4 times a month and always enjoy our experience there. We went for the last time for lunch on Sunday (2/10) and had a waiter that was unfamiliar to us but seemed very nice at first. I ordered a guacamole salad with a side of mixed vegetables. When the food came, my guacamole salad at first didn't seem to have any guac on it. I moved a lettuce leaf and saw a teaspoon sized amount. I mentioned to the waiter that I thought the kitchen had made a mistake and could he take it back for more guac. He said no that this was the appropriate amount. I said I didn't think that was the case as I often order the guac salad. He said it is the right amount and he can have more added for $1.50 extra. I asked the see the manager. This seemed to be the tipping point for the waiter. He said that the manager would say the same thing and it was pointless for him to come over. I said I understood, but would he please send the manager over anyway. The waiter then said to me ma'am this is a restaurant, I can't just go into the kitchen and get free food for you. I again asked to see the manager. He left and returned to tell me the manager had to run out for supplies. I told him since that was the case I no longer wanted the guacamole salad as it wasn't what I expected when ordering. The waiter said it's been delivered to the table and he can take it away but he isn't going to take it off the check. He again referenced not being able to give away free food. His voice was quite loud at this point so I repeatedly asked him to lower his voice which had the opposite effect. He eventually brought out an unsolicited side of guac with more snide comments about giving away free food. I told him that I had already asked him to return the salad and had no interest in the guac. When he brought the check he had broken it into two separate checks with the guacamole salad on a separate ticket. He said here is your check and as for the salad I will take care of it today (he starts walking away) but I'd like to know what restaurants you go to that make you think we can give out food for free. This last parting jibe was said as he walked across the restaurant.
This experience was unlike anything I've ever witnessed. I never raised my voice or was rude to this waiter. He knew with my repeated requests to lower his voice that I was not trying to cause a scene yet he chose to repeatedly come by and make loud snide remarks to me. I wasn't looking for free food. I was looking for the correct food that was ordered. I left my number at the front station for the manager to call and of course have received no contact. I can't envision any circumstance that would make me return to Don Juan's after this experience. Our check listed the server as Pedro M. but I am not sure if that is his name or not. Regardless, his behavior was unacceptable...
Read moreI went to the Kernersville location, where we are regular customers, last night with my husband and son, who was visiting from college. I asked for 2 more baskets of chips, I didn't want us all to share from the same basket, especially since my son had a cough. I didn't give an explanation because I really didn't think it was necessary. The waiter came back with 1 basket that had a small amount and a lot of broken chips. Later, instead of complaining, I asked the manager for 1 extra basket and he said when we finish those he will do it. i felt like I was about 5 years old. It was humiliating, especially in front of our son, who don't get to see very much. It was taco Tuesday and I ordered over $10 for my entree alone because I didn't want tacos and I feel we were spending enough for all 3 of us to get more chips. I didn't use to feel limited like that. The manager later came back after giving me more chips and offered me more and was nice and said they don't want to waste food. That didn't take away how i felt and how I was made to feel guilty earlier. It did put a real damper on our evening. i have been to other mexican restaurants that automatically put extra baskets of chips on the table without asking. It is cold and flu season and I think this restaurant should be more sensitive to that, otherwise the food is good and it's usually a place we enjoy. if they can get this right, i will be...
Read moreHonestly, the quality and taste of the food here has declined significantly over the past year or so. The chicken and steak strips, which they use for almost every dish they serve there, are obviously cooked during prep time before the restaurant opens. By the time evening meals come around, it's like jerky strips of chicken and beef. It's all dry, tough, and stringy. They use ZERO seasoning on their meat, not even salt and pepper. Bland bland bland. Even the carnitas had no seasoning. You might as well just cook a pork chop at home, cut it into cubes and plop in a can of refried beans along beside it. This would probably taste better and be 1/4th of the price at this place. Get it together, Don Juan's. Also, they use cheese sauce on nearly every dish they make and it's way too salty and tastes disgusting. Their "nachos" consist of chips, dry tough meat strips that are many hours old, and cheese sauce (which soaks the chips and turns them to mush). That's IT. No jalapenos, no pico, no sour cream, no other toppings at all.
I highly recommend going to Monte De Rey (near by) instead. Food is fresher, better seasoned, comparable prices, and they don't drench everything in horribly salty cheese sauce. They are also much more friendly and accommodating about small...
