Our visit today was our 8th visit to Duck Donuts, most of which were at the Kill Devil Hills location. This was a birthday visit for our 10 year old who loves Duck Donuts. Not the best visit from our perspective. The staff were stressed, rude and very unhelpful. I'm attributing this to the heat, the summer rush and the Covid-19 social distancing restrictions Duck Donuts have enacted. Only allowing 8 people in the store at a time meant a line of 20 people out on the sidewalk in the broiling 96 degree summer sun. No advance menus were handed out, so we were left feeling very rushed when we finally got in the store. Trying to read the menu for coffee and donuts when the information was in 3 different places - 1 on the large board for coffee (we still have no idea what cold coffee options were available), 1 for the specials and another for the donuts. The young lady behind the order counter was non-verbal at best, very unhelpful! The woman running the door rudely asked our 2 kids to step out unattended while my wife and I fixed our coffees. She allowed a party of 8 (2 adults and 5 kids) in the store while other customers were in there thereby violating the 8 customer rule while we waited in line.
Suggestions for improvement - Provide shelter for those waiting outside, or at least provide water. Pass out advance order slips so they can fill them out and pass them up, thereby avoiding the interior of the store all together. Discontinue the unsanitary make-your-own coffee bar as that takes time and results in fewer customers in the store over time. Recruit and train staff with customer service in mind.
We were Duck Donuts customers, but not any more. If we were to patronize this business, it would be via online orders only as I am not up to the stress of being...
Read moreThe hype is real. These donuts are out of this world. Decadent toppings compliment a light and fluffy, fresh-from-the-fryer donut. I was excited to visit a location near the original location while on vacation in the outer banks. There’s a couple near my home in Durham, but I wanted an authentic vacation donut experience. The donuts were excellent. The reason for the three stars is due to my wife’s order. We started our visit by waiting for a few customers to be walked through the ordering process. I can understand going somewhere for the first time and being unfamiliar with the process, but after a quick primer, have those customers step aside and get their order card ready, and take care of the line of customers who have their cards ready to go. We got our coffees and donuts quickly. Unfortunately, my wife’s order of an English muffin got lost somewhere along the line. We waited for twenty minutes and had to ask two people (both had manager proudly displayed on their name tag) to check on it. The second person actually had to go back and make the sandwich up. When we got to the car she bit into it and it was ice cold. The muffin had obviously just been taken out of a cooler and the cheese was nowhere near warm. I fear what could have happened with the bacon. I’d like to be able to say that we shouldn’t have ordered the muffin at a famous donut location, but don’t offer it on the menu if you’re not going to take...
Read moreThis is one great place to get doughnuts!!! I love the make-your-own doughnut and that they have some from you to choose from. I also live watching the doughnuts get fried in their conveyor belt frying machine! It's practically mesmerizing.
You go in and you fill out a check list sheet of what you want on your doughnuts and then they make the doughnuts right in front of you. It's fun, great for both kids and adults. There are a few free samples at the front of the store if you're there skeptical/curious type.
Only been there once, but it was recommended by friends and I am glad I went. Delicious!
I wish there was a seating area, but taking the figures back to our hotel and eating them on the porch while looking over the ocean during the sunrise was a great way to start the day!
They also have coffee, hot cocoa, and other beverages to accompany your breakfast treats.
There are plenty of choices for toppings and frostings for the doughnuts. Have no fear there, it was actually tempting to buy enough doughnuts to try a little bit of everything... But fortunately my wife stopped me, haha.
Definitely go once they first open... It's another place that is very popular and fills up fast. It want bad when they opened, but by the time we got out the inside had plenty of people and I've heard that during the vacation season it gets a hefty line outside (with good reason, these doughnuts are GOOD!!!)
10 out of 10,...
