We visited Grand Old West while taking a scenic route from Vail to Fort Collins, accompanied by my mother, my wife, and our three kids. My wife was craving a hamburger, and the reviews suggested this place was a good choice. Upon arrival, everything seemed promising. The staff was friendly, and they were accommodating with high chairs for our kids. However, it was evident that the restaurant was understaffed, with only two employees handling all the tables and the bar.
We ordered drinks and our meals, and although the drinks came out in a decent time, the wait for our food was exceptionally long. We waited for 45 minutes without any updates or refills on our drinks, while other tables that arrived after us were served and even left. Our server never checked back with us during this time. With kids on a road trip, this wait was particularly challenging, but they handled it well.
After waiting for another 20 minutes, my mother politely asked if they could at least bring some fries for the kids. The server’s response was rude and dismissive, telling us to be patient despite our extended wait time. This was surprising and disappointing.
Finally, after a total wait of over 1.5 hours, I decided to cancel our order and pay for the drinks. Only then did the other server check on our order, finding it ready. The food was satisfactory, but the experience was overshadowed by the excessive wait and the rude handling of our situation. Our original server never returned to our table, and the other server brought our bill.
While I understand that restaurants can get busy, how the staff handles such situations makes all the difference. Unfortunately, this experience was poorly managed, which was disheartening given our support for a small-town business. The food was solid, but the service needs significant...
Read moreFood is good, except don't get the $18 chicken fried steak, it is puny at best. My biggest gripe is we got there at 4 pm, we were hunting in the area and had been out since 5 am. We were told they don't serve dinner till 5 pm, but the dinner special was prime rib. No big deal, So we ordered an hors d'oeuvres and drinks and waited till 5. However shift change happened at 4:30. Our waitress left, and the new waitress (using that term loosely) was surly at best. She starts taking dinner orders before 5pm, then comes to our table last to get our order, which means we got our food after everyone else that came in after us . My husband was ready to leave, we tried repeatedly to get the waitress's attention she just popped off " in a minute", we had only waited 90 minutes at this point. But it doesn't end there, she forgot my soup and salad, remembered my husband's but forgot mine. Then when I finally got it had wrong dressing. I stopped complaining at this point. We ate our food and then waited....and waited. My husband had to go to the bar finally to get our $70 tab. No we did not tip her. My husband was ignored while waiting for the check. We ended up leaving half of my prime rib because we couldn't get to go boxes. I feel bad for our original waitress but I knew she wasn't getting our tip. What really chapped my husband is people that knew the waitress were getting exemplary service and we were treated very poorly. When we walked in the restaurant was empty, so being busy was not the excuse. Oh well, we won't make that mistake again. I want to add my husband has been selling me on this restaurant since 1993. And the three times he has taken me they treated us really poorly. My husband has a long fuse, today he had a contact switch and...
Read moreOverall the place is decent! As I was traveling from Kremling to the hot springs, the building was easy to see. Giant sign that says restaurant. Going inside it is very country and I absolutely love it. I was recommended this place for the bison berger, But they were out and therefore I decided to go with a ribeye steak.
The cut was very tender and they got the temperature perfect, not overseasoned, lovely cut, but I will admit there was a LOT of fat on the cut. Helps with flavor and made it melt, but not half bad. The mashed potatoes with gravy were however a bit less than ideal for me - they were very bland in comparison. The gravy did go well with Texas toast. I was also disappointed because I requested the extra garlic shrimp with the steak, but was never brought any... have no way to tell if I was charged for it since on receipt it just says rebeye and market price on the menu... hence the 3 stars on food - mash potatoes and communication being hits.
The cookies and cream pie was a lovely end to the meal - admittedly though that more than half was whipped cream, but I am a fan and won't turn that down. Plus 1 star for the food.
As for the ping on service, my water went empty halfway through and no refill was offered, but the staff were very happily chatting amongst themselves at the bar. Hence 4 stars - we've all been there, but I was not thrilled.
Overall would come back if I am coming...
