There are not many opportunities in Los Angeles to get an image over substance meal, and I say that as someone who grew up on the east coast, and lived in Italy.
LA is all about being seen and "the scene" BUT there are these out of the way places, hidden—as Taylor's is, both in La Canada and in KTOWN—where you would hope, maybe pray for an exception to the rule.
Unfortunately, Taylor's is hampered by a few issues.
Service: The hostess and bar staff are not happy campers. They don't like their customers and it shows. Also, I think the feeling is mutual. You would have to live here to understand the dynamic but all of LA is sort of in the throws of Interest Group Warfare. The WOKE vs the secret Republicans, which La Canada is packed with (see history of the area to understand more).
I was here one night when some bar patrons were chatting about Trump in a positive way. The Bar staff got very upset and two people were eventually asked to leave. The pretext was irrelevant. But the result was that half the bar stopped talking and the place emptied out.
The hostess in particular was hyper rude to us and everyone else. We did not have a good time and our meal was ruined.
They can't cook a steak. And the meat they use is pretty tough. Whether I order medium rare or well done—makes no difference. Everything is always undercooked, to the point of being raw. I asked them why this is. From THEIR mouths—"People always send their meat back so we undercook so that we don't need to throw the steaks out". Does that make sense???
Meat quality—as alluded to above. Not a fan. Butcher Box has infinitely better quality meat. And that comes frozen.
Shrimp cocktail was fishy. Potatoes are bland. Haven't had much else.
Price. Check the menu. It's expensive.
I still love the look of this place as it reminds me of the spots I grew up going to, but without a proper manager—the girl who takes your name is a disaster—and with staff who can't offer proper customer service without a chip on their shoulder, plus antagonism toward anyone who isn't WOKE—well, it's not worth my time nor yours.
The KTOWN location is a little better but not by much. Staff are more...
Read moreWe've been coming here since Taylor's first replaced Spar. The service is always great and we love Memo (our long time server) which is the only reason I'm giving this 3 stars instead of 2.
For the first time in years the food was extremely disappointing. Normally the garlic bread is nice and crispy with some crusted cheese on top. This time it was a soggy over-buttered mess with no cheese and no crispness. Of course, that's just bread so would never fully knock a restaurant for sub-par garlic bread.
Then came our main meals. I got lamb chops. They had ZERO seasoning and therefore were extremely bland and boring. No pop of flavor which lamb usually gives. My mom got a steak appetizer and it also was extremely lack luster.
Finally our dessert, the key lime pie. For me, out of everything we ate, this was the only thing I truly enjoyed and to be honest it wasn't the actual pie that was exciting but rather the delicious crust!
Honestly, for the price tag, as much nostalgia and memories that we have here, we have even more years of nostalgia and memories at Castaway in Burbank (we've been going there since early 70s when I was a kid) and honestly, if we're gonna treat ourselves to a pricey meal, going forward it's likely only going to be Castaway.
We went there to celebrate mom's birthday. I also had lamb chops there. Everything we ordered was bursting with flavor...not like the bland kitchen we got at Taylor's this last week. So disappointing cuz I love supporting family...
Read moreFirst time at this location. The bread is great, might be the best sourdough in La Canada/Flintridge. The escargot were so good I forgot to photograph them until the last minute. The special was Filet Oscar with the asparagus on top, it was very rich sauce that mixed well with the filet. The regular bone out ribeye was a winner, just classic with fries. Another in the party got the small plate Coulotte, which I don't remember on the menu in KTown, and there were other small plate cuts for steaks which is a very, very good idea!
As for me I had the molly of course, one of my faves, the server offered it chopped (!!!) which was intriguing! but I couldn't make the adjustment and went for the small (NB: always get the larger!) and then I ordered the london broil, which i have been wanting a good london broil and was at Taylor's twice already this year so i figured it'd be a good plate. I ordered it rare. It was just okay -- a little tough and dry, even though it was pink. exactly NOT what I wanted. It was not something I'd order again. I thought it would be hard to mess it up and I was wrong. On the positive side, the horseradish sauce was good, and I ordered two sides of grilled onions, a side that wasn't available at the KTown location.
So even though my precise entree was disappointing, it still was serviceable and overall the food and service was very good. I might return to this location soon to try out a Brobdingnagian tapas with those small...
