Yes, the reviews are right. The bread truly is that good.
This place was on my list when I first moved to Lafayette and I was excited to visit. Fast forward to now and I've tried most of their bread varieties and enjoyed all of them.
They have different breads on the menu for each day of the week so keep that in mind when planning your visit. They sometimes have day old pastries that are 50% off. (Brownies, morning buns, etc.) They sometimes also have a basket of day old bread, sitting on the table across from the counter. The breads mostly have a little sour taste and aren't very sweet so if you're used to grocery store bread, it might be a little different. But I promise, Smitty Bread is so much better. Very filling too. Other than bread, they sell pretzels, savory baked goods and pastries. The pastries are also delicious. (Brownies, morning buns and chocolate croissants are my favorite) Staff is friendly and patiently explains different items if you ask them. They sell out fast on some days so call ahead to check that your favorite loaf is available.
The Olive bread is my favorite here and they are another reason to get excited for Friday's.

Read moreLovely experience. Although it can seem pricey, the fact that their employees are paid above the minimum wage, products always fresh, and good quality of ingredients maid it worthwhile. I loved the environment, the friendly staff, and the bread is one of the best I have tried in Lafayette. I got chocolate croissant, ham and swiss cheese croissant, almond croissant, and a baguette. I loved the baguette, the crust was so enjoyable, perfect to accompany breakfast. The croissants were good too. My only complaint is with the ham and swiss cheese croissant, it had little ham and the cheese was not there. I guess it went out during the baking process. The cake on top of the cherry was the hot chocolate. I can not do much dairy, so they made an oat milk hot chocolate for me even though that was not on the menu. I really appreciated that and the chocolate was delicious. I am sure it will be even better with milk. I would suggest to have non-dairy options for the ones who can not do dairy. Go early in the morning so you can find all the options and consider that they do not open every day...
Read moreProper steam induced, crusty bread. Only place in the community that I'm aware of using this technique. The owner has a blog called bread porn. He went to San Francisco to study how to do it right. He learned well. Worthy of a San Francisco farmer's market. There's no higher praise. His family helps a ton. Great place. And not to be weird, but the other great, family owned/run bakery in town, Great Harvest, has a completely complimentary selection. The two bakeries together form a fabulous one two punch (both are five star individually--together they're ten stars!). You can easily get crusty sourdough bread, a world beater pretzel and Danish at Smitty's and head down to Great Harvest for Virginia savory bread, a tasty soup and a world...
