Best sushi we've had in this area. You think being on the Gulf Coast that be some good sushi options in the area; there are not. To imagine my surprise when we walk into this restaurant and uni is on the chef's board. They were out of it, but just the fact that they do have it sometimes was a good sign for me. We started with a hamachi carpaccio which is served warm and was quite good. Next up was the albacore crispy onion. This was served cold and the albacore was very good but we didn't much care for the crispy onion, it kind of took over the fish. Next we had the Hamachi Kama which was excellent. This is a must try. It is the color of the yellowfin tuna. It is served with the bone in but is very easily dissected with chopsticks. Had the lemon and ponzu that comes with it and it is delicious. For the main course we split the Honolulu roll. I almost overlooked this rule because when I saw Honolulu I was thinking it was sweet, you know Hawaii pineapple and all. Tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, with yellow tail on top. The yum yum sauce and eel sauce that goes on top was a little sweet, but I requested some sriracha to put on top of that and it balanced it out. I also dipped it in a mixture of soy sauce and wasabi. Lastly, for dessert we had two pieces of Saba. It was nicely brined and goes very well with...
Read moreA good sushi place in an unexpected location. The menu and decor is very traditional and it does exactly what you'd expect for a sushi place. That said, for some of the more traditional menu options like mackerel, you have to ask.
The beef udon is nice, and done with a compensation for Texan tastes, the beef is grilled and relatively thick cut, as opposed to being thin cuts or shaved beef that is cooked in the boiling pot, this is cooked on a grill before hand. Not bad, just a flair to appeal to Texans. I would suggest this for anyone hesitant about trying Japanese fare, as an added perk, the soft-boiled egg, instead of being cut in half and still gooey is served "whole" and is Sunnyside down.
The mackerel, I am relieved they had this, a traditional staple of Japanese cuisine that is often overlooked here in the US, abroad in Japan it's more common than salmon, and to look at it you see why. The entire thing is aesthetically pleasing to all senses, and this is where the umami of sushi...
Read moreYoshi is a good tasting restaurant to eat it in Lake Jackson. When walking in they have tables and a bar area to eat it so you can decide if you want to eat your meal at a table or if you want to watch the workers make a sushi creation that is delicious. The bar area allows you to see what sushi is being made and if you order sushi them you can watch them make your rolls that you ordered to eat. We ordered gyoza as an appetizer, and the flavor it had was once of the very best that I have ever had from an Asian restaurant. There were 6 Gyozas in one order which allowed for each of us to try 2 and get a good feeling of the flavor and taste. We ordered 5 different sushi rolls for the 3 of us to share. The California roll, crab meat roll, eel cucumber roll, crispy shrimp roll and tuna toll. The rolls were delicious. We also tasted the lychee sake, which really was a treat, it tasted just like lychee and it brought me back good memories of when I used to...
