The quality definitely doesn't match the price. One of my family has asked for BBQ, and instead of going to a chain, going the entire opposite direction of where we needed to go, or driving into Portland, we decided to try this place out.
Calling in the order, picked up, immediately asked to hold. No big deal, right? 13 minutes later, no one had come back to talk, just disconnected. Every subsequent call was busy toned. Ok, busy Saturday, right? Except I can hear the person who asked me to hold having taken an order, talked to another customer about 4 or 5 minutes in, then nothing. Again, giving all the benefit of the doubt here, we head inside intending to order. They finish taking an order, no acknowledgement of our presence, then walk off to clean a table. Still, benefit of the doubt... then they don't come back for minutes.
Finally, after waiting the 2 or 3 minutes for them to return, the person we talk to is kind, helpful, recommends stuff. All sounds good, so we put in a fairly decent sized offer, making sure we'd have leftover and all that, tops $100 with ease. Doesn't take too long to prepare and it seems packaged pretty well. Off we go
The meats... I have no idea how this place remains over 4 stars. The only time I've ever had a brisket as dry as this one was a chain at the very very end of their day, not 30 minutes after opening. Ribs, also dry. Worse still, both lacked a prominent flavor. The Brisket may as well have been leather with the flavor and texture. It is still brisket so it wasn't chewing a giant piece of leather, but as it broke apart it was, each was it's own unique and tiny bit of leather. Ribs, same deal, just overcooked, no flavor, no juice. Lets put it this way, I needed exactly one napkin to wipe my hands after eating both without a fork.
The sides. Bacon mac and cheese and white cheddar mac and cheese are more or less one in the same. They're not terrible, but they're not good either. Lacking salt and pepper at the low end, but really lacking flavor all around. Cornbread was not a hit with anyone though I didn't think it the worse I'd ever had. It's very gritty, homemade style, not the JIF box style at all, but it's missing something. Butter helped, but it wasn't a whole fix. Potato salad was about the highlight for others and I found it to be a better version of a homemade potato salad than some, but it was just slightly dried out mashed potatoes with pickles added.
Maybe it was an off day, maybe it was leftovers from the day before, maybe until the end of time, but it was not worth the time, hassle, or the money. Side note, get extra bbq sauce. It's good, but it doesn't go a long ways if the...
Read moreAll the food and sides are out of this world. I strongly recommend the brisket, tri tip and macaroni and cheese. Very delicious! They have a wonderful amount of delicious sides as well as meats. We always have to take half of our meal home as the portion sizes are so large. It makes great left overs. We love their food! The beef ribs are not tender though and you have to rip them away from the bone. I have to give it 4 stars because the food and restaurant are wonderful. The outside seats is a treat too.
My review would have been 5 stars, but I had to remove one because the female supervisor/manager says really awkward things. It was such an offensive engagement for us that so thought about giving an overall 3 star rating, but the food is just too good and I didn't want that to lower their average rating based off of all reviewers. We had our 4 month old with us and he could not sit in a high chair. He had to cozy up in either my husband's or my arm in order to sit up and then we would feed our selves with whichever hand we weren't using. People who have child understand this. We rested him in one of arms at our own table to give our arms relief. We couldn't keep him in his carrier or infant seat otherwise he would start screaming. We were the only people in the restaurant seated at a table; there were two other people at the bar. The female manager in her 40's says, "In all my years, I've never seen a baby on a dinner table before! Interesting." That's all she says to us while are there besides taking our order. I'd be fine with what she said if she were joking or chose to carry on a conversation with us, but we felt like she was just pointing us out. She then comes and sits at the table next to us and proceeds to correct one of her employees behind the bar which cause her to yell across the restaurant. We just wanted to enjoy our meal in peace. She was completely awkward and if we do order from that restaurant, we just get take out instead from now on. Her comments and actions made us feel like we weren't welcome or allowed to be accommodated as a small family of 3. It's not our go-to restaurant anymore unless we are able to sit outside in the pretty garden area...
Read moreThree years ago, the food was good and the service staff was very friendly. But at the time we had just moved into the region (literally that week) and may have been very hungry. In the last two years the quality of both has dropped significantly. The side dishes are unfortunately bland - I say "unfortunate" because they have all the feel of coming from someone's family cookbook. Their beans need salt... or fat... or a far longer cooking time. They taste flat, undeveloped, and as if they were made a few hours prior. Normally, fresh-made is a good thing, but for baked beans this is not a good flavor. The coleslaw is both watery - possibly indicating poor mixing or long storage; while managing to keep all of the sour flavor of traditional southern coleslaw - not a good combination. The actual BBQ is over-smoked while being undercooked. That state of BBQ meat where it is definitely cooked, but the fat has not rendered within the meat. The chicken we were served was warm, not hot, with an great smoke flavor and a vague mushy texture that was honestly disturbing. The pork ribs had similar mushy texture problems. The meat does not fall off the bone, and more than once my mouth found a texture that suggested undercooked. Upon inspection, this turned out to not be the case, but I suspect it had more to do with the un-rendered fat issue mentioned above. In the end - the style of BBQ was not to our liking. This may be a preference issue. Having been around the country and Caribbean, I would disagree with that idea - but I can admit to the possibility of bias. In pure opinion, I feel the quality of the cooking is not commensurate with...
