I'm sorry to say I and my two guests had a terrible first experience with Burke's Public House in Edgewater, my neighborhood. On Sunday, April 23rd at 7pm we sat down for a meal, our first time at this bar since moving to this side of Chicago. Though the restaurant was not crowded, we were ignored for ten minutes after the manager told us to sit wherever we like. When the manager finally caught our eye again, he provided menus. Another length of time until we were able to order from our waitress, two hamburgers and a salad. The hamburgers came at the appropriate time, but the salad was forgotten. The manager came to apologize and comp the salad. He asked if we needed anything else. We asked for drink refills. He said "of course", but never brought these. When the salad finally came, it was not prepared as ordered (dressing was asked to be on the side, this salad was soaked) and we had to ask, again, for drink refills. I went to the manager in private to complain before eating my meal (I had guests, this was embarrassing) and inquire about the the terrible service from the moment we sat down. He told me it was "just a bad night". I told him I hoped it would get better, as I would like to be able to bring friends here. I sat back down with my guests, and that is when we witnessed the same thing happen to the only other table in the dining room; their food was also forgotten, two more unhappy customers. When our bill came, the salad was comped, but we were charged $1.50 each for two soda refills. That was it for me. I told the manager that to charge us for the drinks that he offered and never brought to us was unbelievably bad taste, especially knowing that our experience was not going well. He should have been the one to bring the check, and make any kind of effort to keep our business. I paid my bill but will never go back here. There are too many other options to bring friends and loved ones to in Chicago....
Read moreUsed to love coming here with my pup until this last visit. Everyone Iâve met here has been super nice and accommodating with outdoor seating with my dog. I have always asked if it is ok to sit outside before sitting down, and the response has always been almost like theyâre offended I would even ask. Just sit down! Enjoy yourself! Just like a neighborhood spot should be. Tonight I saw the outdoor server with his hands full giving plates of food to a large table. He looked right at me and saw me. So keeping to how friendly this place usually is about sitting outside, I decided to get me and my pup out of his way and grab a table. In the meantime another couple was seating themselves when they happened to get the serverâs attention as he was returning to the seating area. He was super friendly about letting them sit wherever. Then as he approached my table, he made it a point to raise his voice and declare for all to hear that I need to check for seating before taking a table. Letâs just forget about the fact that he literally saw me or that I was intentionally making space for him. Letâs also forget about the fact that he literally just let others sit who were already on their way to taking a table but for the fact that he happened to walking back over to the seating area and saw them. There are literally a million ways to approach my situation without making a public scene over it. I was embarrassed and told him I do not need to be lectured on seating protocols. If outdoor seating is closed, just say that. Otherwise post a sign for outdoor seating procedures so you donât make your customers look stupid in front of other people. Needless to say the pup and I left, and itâs doubtful Iâll...
Read morei was pretty excited to finally try this place and was super disappointed tbh. it took forever for anyone to even acknowledge us despite it being nearly empty, then when we ordered the service was abysmal. we had to repeat what we were trying to order multiple times and clarify just to order a simple dish. the sodas are apparently off brand but it doesnât say that anywhere and they honestly are disgusting to the point i couldnât even drink it. $3.50 for an off brand soda thatâs basically all ice and were told explicitly in a rather rude manner that âitâs only one refillâ, as if i wouldâve wanted another glass of whatever that was.
the food finallllly came out and idk how it even made it out of the kitchen. half the chips on on the nachos were burnt to the point of being black and were missing multiple toppings. and the toppings all tasted like store bought from the jewel a block down, then just thrown on the burnt chips to call it nachos. i couldâve made better nachos at home instead of paying $13 for them. i see other reviews say that the portions are large which wasnât the case for us. we got maybbeee 8 fries with our sandwiches which were again mid at best, definitely just frozen slop. the only redeeming quality was whatever garlic sauce was served alongside the burger. other than that it was an entire waste of money for food that could pass as hospital cafeteria food. save your time and money to go down the street for way better service and grub, bc this place is...
