Lost Larson, you put many of the French bakeries to shame. Being a transplant in Indianapolis, I’ve had the wonderful experience of having Amelia’s within a reasonable driving distance. Then, one day, a USA Today article was published outlining the 10 best bakeries in America. Lost Larson made the list (as well as Amelia’s), so I had to make a stop while in town for work.
The exterior is unassuming, while the interior is minimalist but well appointed. It leaves you to focus on what is important, the sweet treats and breads. Now, if Google kept all of my pictures, you’ll see I purchased a spread...literally all of my calories came from here on this day...because it needed a thorough taste test and I may never get to go back.
So let’s get started...chocolate croissant; warm, flaky, dark chocolate, and just a pinch of cardamom (?)...delightful. Cardamom bun...wow, it tasted like fruity pebbles and bergamot...the surprise of the group. The tea cake...delicate and perfect to pair with a cup of black tea. Tebirkes...more savory than sweet with the almond paste and poppyseeds...pleasing to my pallet. Monkey bread...a nice crunch and perfect to pair with a coffee. Banana bread...moist, a taste of ripened banana, and little gems of chocolate peppered throughout...I dare you to make better at home.
The Princess Cake was light and fluffy...but also had thin layer of crunch and raspberry punch. It was beautiful and flavorful. The only disappointment was the lemon tart (it was Asian citrus, can’t remember the exact citruses used)...for me, the lemon custard just didn’t have enough bite and was a bit too sweet. I was pleased with the jammy bit in the center, it was tart and I would have appreciated more.
The breads were also excellent...limps and potato. Little pockets pepper the soft interior and contrast to the crunchier exterior, giving way to multiple textures as you take a bite...the way bread should be!
The artisans of Lost Larson, and their community, should be proud...
Read moreWas so excited to try here but the service and the product left something to be desired. We just got back from Copenhagen and were so excited to find there was a scandi bakery not that far from us and wanted to go in for a little treat. We arrived at noon and only croissants were left. We asked the guy behind the counter if those were the only pastries. He laughed and said “oh you gotta get here before 11am if you want pastries”. Okay that’s fine. We ordered coffee. We ordered and paid for 2 16oz drinks. We were given one 16oz and one 12oz drink. Were not asked if we wanted it for here (we did) so we got to go cups. While we were waiting for our drinks to be made 4 new pastries were put out!! Less than 5 minutes after we ordered. Which means the guy behind the counter KNEW they were making more. He could have just said, if you want to wait a couple minutes there will be more. Instead he made it seem like we were idiots for coming late. So we sat down and ordered one of the new pastries. It was…not good. We got the chocolate hazelnut croissant. It was burnt and sickly sweet. Not scandi quality at all. They gave it to us in a to go bag even though we were sitting down. All of the other ppl around us had plates and silverware. Finally a girl came and brought us a plate and a knife…. No fork. So we had to go ask for a fork.
All in all, won’t go again. Service is very poor. They also charge you an extra 15% service fee on top of tips. So considering we tipped and paid an extra 15% fee on top of that, I would expect even the most basic level of service…which...
Read moreDinner and pastries 5* Server knowledge and friendliness 5* Chef attitude and policies 0* 3 of us went for dinner Aug 28, 2019. We like to have wine and appetizers before we order our main course. Sometimes our dinner decision changes after we had a little wine and appetizer. The friendly server informed us that the chef will not accept the order that way. We must put our entire order in, and she will come back when we decided on the rest of our food. I told her to ask the chef if we can order at our pace and not his or her's. We are the paying customers and we should not be there to serve them. The place was never crowded during our hour and a half visit. She returned to tell us that the chef will make an exception this time but not the next time. I told her that with this attitude there probably won't be a next time. We ordered our separate dinners to find out that they come out in courses as though we will all be sharing each other's food. If this is the serving style we should of been informed about this. After our dinner my friend wanted to take some pastry home. He was told they do not give printed receipts only email. He does not like to give out his email. Why they can't do this is anybody's guess, since they were able to give me a printed one for the dinner. Furthermore I did not see on the menu that there was a surcharge for employee insurance. This is annoying I may be back for the pastry, but never lunch or dinner. Hope this arrogant chef can survive all the competition on...
