I grew up eating at the Pancake House and never had a bad meal but today my husband picked up food for us to eat at home; eggs benedict and the potato pancakes. His benedict was mediocre but fine, not something he would order again but it was edible. My pancakes, however...inedible. I love all sorts of potato pancakes and have eaten them anytime I see them on a menu. I have never encountered a plate of them with such a weird smell and bad taste that I couldn't eat them. Mind you, I was starving and if they were just whatever I would have gone ahead but I literally could not swallow these. We called to let the manager know. That took me 6 phone calls to do, between being placed on interminable hold and twice being "disconnected" and then getting the answering machine. When I finally connected with the manager, he said he could not refund my item, but we could come all the way back to exchange it for anything else. That's lovely, but we were home and not wanting to come all the way back. I worked in many restaurants and do not see why a refund of my $12 isn't possible. I will be checking that out with the corporate office but hope that I didn't just throw that money away. I don't know what happened to this place. They used to offer really great food and top-notch service. Honestly, even if we could come right back (if we lived closer) I would be hesitant to try something else. Very disappointing and next time we want to pick up breakfast we'll try Yolk...

I left disappointed because the bill felt pretty high for what we got.
I ordered the Sausage and Egg breakfast, which came with 4 Sausage links, two eggs over easy, and a 3 buttermilk pancakes.
My wife ordered the bacon and egg breakfast, which was 4 strips of bacon, scrambled eggs, and 2 pieces of toast.
We each also got a cup of coffee.
The sausages were skinny and about 3 inches or so in length. My eggs felt small. Maybe every other breakfast place uses large eggs? I wish I took a picture. The plate was a standard size plate but because of how small the Sausage and eggs were, it felt like a really empty plate. My sausages were also room temperature, not hot.
The pancakes were also small, the size of a side plate. Not sure if that's how big the normal order of pancakes are, but compared to almost any other breakfast joint they were really small.
The bacon was fine, didn't taste like much for some reason, while there was a better portion of scrambled eggs.
Altogether our meal came out to $46 after tax.
I left hungry.
We went to Yolk across the street a few weeks back and spent a bit less and...
Read moreI have been eating at the Original Pancake House (in general) since I was a little girl. It used to be so special. Whoever owns it now doesn’t care about the product! The 616 West Diversey Pkwy location is the worst! If they are not serving hair in your food, they are completely ruining your order! I have had enough! There are way too many breakfast restaurants to hold on to some nostalgic feeling, and never be satisfied. I ordered through Uber eats for my birthday and only received less than half of the order. Uber eats only refunds the money they never go out of the way to make sure that you are serviced properly in receiving your food. I called the restaurant and they do nothing as well. I explained it’s my birthday today I wanted something special I thought I would get something special and I got nothing I was charged $60 for less than half of an order. I will never ever return to the original House of pancakes! They will fall to the wayside and out of business just like all the other very bad restaurants! That’s a shame it used...
