La Costena Restaurant Authentic Peruvian Cuisine — Restaurant in Lancaster

Really impressed with the food. My wife and I were on a weekend getaway to Lancaster and found this place online. We live closer to NYC so we always go to Passaic/Paterson for the best Peruvian cuisine.

Whenever we travel to other states, we don’t expect to get the best authentic flavors, but La Costena really impressed me. I actually thought that their pollo saltado a la probre was the best I’ve had. I love the fact that they included the fried plaintains and fried egg with my dish as it’s a combination I’ve not encountered at any Peruvian restaurant before. And they marinate the chicken separately with ginger and garlic as those are some of my favorite ingredients. The chicken came out so tender and flavorful.

My wife loved her seafood and rice dish and the ceviche picante which used Swai fish, the same that I use when I make ceviche at home. To top it off the restaurant is BYOB, and the music they were playing was awesome, a combination of 80’s and Latin music. I swear, they stole my personal playlist. I highly recommend you stay away from this place. My family just went to this restaurant today and they tried to charge for an extra plate that they didn’t even order. They even tried to convince her that SHE was wrong and that she did order it (which they can clearly see on there table that they only had the ones they ordered). She asked for the receipt to see all the charges and at first they wanted to charge her right away. Come to find out they added a 20% tip on her check as well without her knowledge. They were refusing to give her a check until finally they gave up and gave her the check. They took out the extra plate that WAS NEVER ORDERED at least. Unfortunately, they made her pay for the 20% tip. We tip our servers every time we go out, but when that’s added on the check without our knowledge that’s what pissed me off. I’ve checked Yelp and other sites and there are others who’ve had the same issues with this restaurant. Also, we checked the menu and the door to see if the 20% was ever mentioned and it was not, nor was it mentioned...

It was not good. It’s just that simple. We got a corn and cheese app. It was literally a corn on the cob on top of queso Fresca slices. To be clear the corn was warmish and the cheese was not melted. The “pepper sauce” that was on the yuca app (and later the fettuccine) can only be described as spicy cheese whiz. The fried fish was tasteless. The steak and rice bowl was basically fried rice that I could have gotten at any nondescript Chinese place. The chicken/veg and steak/veg entree were meh at best. The waitress never refilled our drinks or checked on us once we had our food. This wasn’t bc they were busy. There were four other tables the entire 2 hours we were there.
