We visited the Langley Kitchen on a hella busy Saturday morning, so we realize it’s got to be much different on a typical weekday.
That said:
All the staff were vibrant and kind, doing the best they could under busy circumstances, but I swear the Langley Kitchen could use an operations consultant. They had eight people working behind the scenes, far more than most kitchen cafés of their size, but they just couldn’t keep up.
My family’s order was a 12-ounce latte, an 8-ounce Americano, and an oat-milk latte. Three beverages. Our wait time? 30 minutes.
The guy behind me? He ordered an iced tea, and I didn’t stick around to see whether he got it. That guy was pissed.
As we waited, many of the patrons around me changed moods: from patient, to annoyed, and finally to angry. One patron asked the staff what was taking so long, and they were told, “Orders are filled in the same order they’re taken.”
Ah hah! I see the problem.
This is a terrible way to run a café, or any kind of food service really, especially when it’s busy. The guy with the iced tea? That should have been filled by the order taker or her immediate support, instantly. That guy should’ve been out the door within 60 seconds.
Beverages like lattes and cappuccini? They should get their own production line, with two of that eight-person crew working diligently to fulfill those orders and get them out as soon as they’re done.
Food? If it’s cold, serve it immediately, like that iced tea should’ve been. If it’s premade but needs to be heated, then heat it up and get it out as quickly as possible. If it’s made fresh, that will take the longest, and let people take a number and sit down outside to wait for their food. Manage expectations and let them know it’ll be a while. In the meantime, get them their drinks.
But sure enough, what the staff member said was correct: Each item came out exactly in the sequence it was ordered. Once she’d said it, I watched for it.
I wonder if that poor guy ever got his iced tea?
You’re an awesome spot, Langley Kitchen, with great food. Your staff are so friendly and well-meaning. But you can up your service...
Read moreI had been in touch with Jim the week leading up to our visit. I had been looking closely at the offerings listed through the 'Order Now' tab on their website and saw items that I was interested in selling out. Jim was quick with a reply and let me know they would be back by our visit, but that the restaurant has been super busy, so to check back as our visit got closer. He even emailed me again when the brussel sprout and kale salad I had been eyeing went out of season before our visit. The fact that this owner took time from his busy day to touch base with me again before I had even stepped foot in the door told me all I needed about this place. Attention to detail and fresh ingredients were guaranteed. My family flew in from out of town, and I knew Langley would be just the stop we would need before visiting our family's farm over in Possession. There were 6 of us all together, so a larger group, for sure. Our visit didn't disappoint! It was INCREDIBLE!!! We had the special (pulled pork sandwich) it was GIANT, the quiche (which my cousin was her favorite), The Bayview (which I asked to have without the aioli (I don't do mayo) and instead I asked for a side of sherry vinaigrette - this was an awesome combination. One of my cousins ordered the salmon cake and he hesitated on ordering just one, but he was glad he did - he said it was amazing, but rich and filling. We also ordered every single salad in the case (my other cousin claimed the curry chicken salad was unbelievable and the best thing she has had in a long time). The fruit was fresh and just right. The kale and squash was crisp and delicious. And of course we ended our visit with a blonde brownie and a latte - both of which were finished to the last crumb and drop. This place should not be missed! Come for the food and return for the service. The crew here was friendly and knew how to make us feel...
Read moreDuring my recent visit to Langley on Whidbey Island, I stumbled upon Langley Bakery, and it turned out to be a delightful highlight of my trip. This charming bakery not only exudes warmth with its cozy ambiance but also offers an array of mouthwatering treats that left a lasting impression.
The bakery prides itself on freshness, and it truly shows in every bite. I sampled their turkey meatloaf sandwich and their unique take on the classic BLT, and both dishes were not just delicious but also incredibly satisfying. The flavors were vibrant, and each ingredient tasted exceptionally fresh, which elevated the experience to a new level.
To complement my meal, I indulged in their specialty coffees, and I must say, Langley Bakery knows how to brew a perfect cup. The cinnamon bun latte was a standout - rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced with just the right hint of cinnamon sweetness.
The service was friendly and attentive, adding to the overall welcoming atmosphere of the bakery. Whether you're a local or a visitor like myself, Langley Bakery is a must-visit. I left feeling not only full but also thoroughly impressed by the quality and care put into every item they offer.
In conclusion, Langley Bakery surpassed my expectations and became a highlight of my trip to Langley and Whidbey Island. I wholeheartedly recommend stopping by to experience their delightful...
