I want to ensure my review speaks directly to our experience from start to finish so you can make an educated decision when youâre thinking about visiting:
(1) Atmosphere - Iâm a huge supporter of local/small businesses and canât imagine the work that goes into owning one; however, I feel like you can still put a personal touch and upkeep your establishment without huge costs. With that being said, it was nice to see the Guam-themed images as youâre entering. Inside though? It is something that was left to be desired, from the layout of tables to the overall feel. It felt like you were in a rough part of town and just wanted to be anywhere else, or home, but it also makes you question the cleanliness of the food.
(2) Food - This will be a lengthy one because weâre from Guam and this was beyond disappointing. We paid about $35 or so for their âAll Inâ plate which had: (1) empanada, (1) lumpia, (1 of each) rib, short rib, chicken, (1) scoop of potato salad and a scoop of chicken kelaguen with a side of finadene.
When we first placed our order we had wanted to order extra sides of empanada (as that was our craving that led to us being here) and were told they only had enough for the plate, and if we wanted more then we should come in the mornings. Thatâs fair, but a little disappointing.
When our food was finally ready we took it home and opened it up and immediately felt disappointed by what we saw. You eat with your eyes first, after all. The chicken looked like they ran it over before they barbecued it, the potato salad looked like it was left out all day, and the empanada looked like an oily sponge.
But looks can be deceiving and we took the plunge hoping we wouldnât regret visiting (food is better prepared at home anyway and thatâs the risk we all take ordering out.)
The marination used for the barbecue was different than what you might be expecting. It had a sweet and vinegary flavor but it wasnât pleasant. The more you savored your bite the more you realized something tasted off. Was it watered down? Is it apple cider? This flavor carried onto the other meats (which is fine because we know us chamorus marinate everything the same way.) so we didnât even try the others.
We took a bite of the empanada and aside from the crispy edge we all love, everything else was disappointing. It tasted like it was fried in old oil that was used for other fried foods, it was soggy and soaked up a lot of the oil, and the filling was equallyâŠwet, in a weird way. The same review goes for the lumpia (which also lacked any flavor.)
The potato salad tasted just as sad as it looked. It lacked all the things potato salad needs (olives, pimentos, relish, etc.) and had so much mayo that made it feel paste-y and like a shortcut.
The kelaguen was probably the only thing in that plate that was almost close to what it should look and taste like. It needed more salt and lemon, but the texture was perfect.
The finadene? Iâve never been more disappointed in anything as I was in that! You could tell just by looking at it that it wasnât going to taste good. It tasted like a weird mixture of all kinds of vinegar with a splash of soy sauce and it was too warm. It almost made you think they just put their marination in a container and added green onions to it.
Overall, whether youâre a fellow islander or not, you might benefit from getting your food elsewhere or (and if youâre craving for that local island food and flavor) make it yourself at home! We ended up not finishing even half of the plate (shared between 3 people) and settled for eating ichiban noodles for dinner instead.
Weâre thankful for this experience because it taught us that our food is better at home, even if itâll take the extra time to prepare. Hopefully the owners can consider these reviews and improve their quality and taste because theyâre representing our island and I feel sad at the idea that other non-islanders may not enjoy this cuisine because of...
Read more6.11.2022. Oh baby baby baby! Just hit the spot! I had to venture out to North Las Vegas to try some food from home... chamorro food. If you grew up in Guam, you know what I mean. First of all the owner and staff/family cooking and preparing the food is awesome! Very welcoming and friendly. Customers are addressed as Auntie and Uncle for the young staff serving the food. Because that's our island way of respecting our elders. Okay so lets get down to the food. So I went for it, and ordered the Fiesta plate with BBQ meats, red rice, potato salad and chicken kelaguen. A total traditional plate of food you would have at an island Fiesta in Guam. Everyone can make these dishes but doing it right makes a difference. This place does it to its original island recipe. The rice alone is so flavourful. I told the owner to not change a thing! The marinade of the pork ribs is so good I can't believe it. The mild sweat taste of soy sauce, (not a Teriyaki sauce) just made me keep knodding my head in total amazement. The short ribs too is so delicious. I just wanted to cry on how this plate of food reminds me of home and my childhood. A return visit to Vegas will include a visit here. If you haven't been here yet, you must. I recently had the pleasure of dining at Island Comfort Grill in Decatur, Las Vegas, and I was absolutely blown away. From the moment I stepped inside, I was transported to a tropical paradise with its vibrant décor and friendly island vibes.
But the real star of the show was the food. I started with the empanadas, which were crispy and golden on the outside and packed with flavorful ricr and spices. The red rice was the perfect accompaniment, fluffy and savory with a hint of sweetness. And then there was the barbecue...oh, the barbecue! The pulled pork was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the ribs were fall-off-the-bone delicious. The smoky flavor was incredible, and the sauce was just the right amount of tangy and sweet.
I also have to mention the service, which was friendly and attentive. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and made sure we had everything we needed.
Overall, Island Comfort Grill is a must-try for anyone looking for a delicious and authentic Hawaiian dining experience in Las Vegas. I can't wait to go back and try more of...
