Poppy's Donuts — Restaurant in Las Vegas

RD is my favorite donut joint in town (this one, not the one by the same name elsewhere). I moved to Las Vegas in 2015, and when I've considered relocating to a different side of the city, the proximity to RD--no joke--has been taken into account. I live within walking distance. I still have not relocated. It's a rare neighborhood charm to have their business this close.

I frequent RD about once a month. A few dozen times in the time span of 2+years. More than enough to know that I'm right: here you will find classic old-school donuts of all shades and shapes, incredibly fair prices (and a freebie for Yelp check-in), discount leftover boxes of 15 or more 'nuts in the early morning, and always a warm greeting. Truly pleasant service. And their modest coffee drinks are on point, modified to your liking or taken as is. It's seldom so busy here as to be annoyingly slow, and even when it is crowded, customer interactions are entertaining. The only detractor from that 5-star review is the shortage of seating. Unless you time it right, grab-and-go as it's difficult to find a place to sit and enjoy a cup and cruller, to read a paper, or do the laptop business. A window bar and/or moving the display case and register to face the door seems like it would open the room up for more tables and seats.

Anyway, I know there is a Vegas fixation on designer donuts, and I agree there's a time for trendy, highfalutin uppity holes stuffed with this and topped with that, for expensive interior designs and a desire to be seen as an upscale donut aficionado rather than to merely snack. Pour a cereal box on this one, and fry some bacon on the other.

During my very first visit, I went in to grab three dozen donuts for a coworkers birthday breakfast, as a last minute decision. I took a second to look at the board, as again this was my very first time in. I knew what I was getting but wanted to see their pricing options in case I wanted to get something more for my coworker. I was the ONLY patron in the store. Two workers and myself. Instead of offering help or letting me know what’s what, Jasmine (one of the employees) just jumped straight into what I needed. I told her I wanted to do a classic dozen (thinking that’s a plain glazed dozen), and a mixed dozen (thinking that’s the donuts with sprinkles, etc). She then told me very rudely that next time I need to call in to get a dozen or more glazed donuts because they only make so many every day… I told her this was on a whim, I was JUST told to come get the donuts…? Her response was “I’m just giving you a heads up.. next time call and let us know because we only make so many.” Then I was told I gave her the wrong option for donuts, that if I wanted the regular donuts, it’s a classic dozen, NOT a mixed dozen. Again, instead of educating me on their menu, or options, she had to be extremely rude the whole time. I did end up adding an additional CLASSIC dozen to make it the total of three dozen before paying and leaving.

Personally, the service put me off to ever coming back. How was I to know, on my FIRST VISIT, that I should have called a donut place to make sure they made enough donuts? It was 9am, so not super late in the day… just left a sour taste in my...
