This place is very close to our house, in the vast culinary wasteland of Tamarac/Lauderhill. Every time we drove by at meal time, the place was pretty packed, and even more so in the later hours when most fast eating places are closed for the day. We had asked one of our neighbors if he had ever been and he said he is there practically daily, Then we knew that we had to check it out.
The interior is island cute. It's a tiny little place with only about 4 tables, so people are there pretty much for takeout. We were there fairly early (5:00ish) and the line was already almost out the door. When we realized that we were probably the only ones in the place that weren't first generation Jamaican, we figured we were in for some good food. The air was redolent with curry, barbecue and exotic scents.
The menu is what you would expect for a Jamaican restaurant. While I am a pretty adventurous eater, I opted to skip the goat's head soup and the cow's foot plate. I didn't know that cows actually had what you would really call feet, in the edible sense of the word. I went with what is one of my island favorites, the curried chicken. Each "plate" comes in 3 sizes, mini, small and large. I went with the small. Everything is served in divided styrofoam take-out boxes.
Orders are placed at the counter and you just shuffle through the line as they scoop stuff into the box and give you some options as you go. My first option was plain white rice, or rice and peas. I went for the latter. Vegetables? Yes, please. My husband was given a choice of several gravies on his jerk pork, but my chicken was already swimming in curry gravy.
I've seen a couple of complaints in the reviews that the serving sizes are too small. I really don't get that. She must have put 3 cups of rice in box to start. Then there was a big scoop of "vegetables," which is actually a sort of cole slaw type salad and then started ladling on the chicken. After several big scoops of chicken, she added a couple of slices of plantain and then literally had to press down on the top of the box to close it. For $8.25, this was the most food I'd seen in a long time.
The curry was delicious. It had the perfect balance of spicy heat, without sending you for the fire extinguisher. I'll admit I'm not a fan of the island method of chopping up chicken into odd chunks, because you do have to be so careful of tiny bone shards as you eat. That being said, it was totally worth it. There was plenty for two meals. The only thing the I thought needed improvement were the plantains and rice. The plaintains were a bit on the dry side and there were only two small slices. The rice and peas was almost exclusively white rice.
My one regret is that I couldn't try whatever kind of yummy looking cake that was, sitting in the domed box on the counter. Next time, when I'm not counting carbs, I'm going...
Read moreThis one star dosen't have anything to do with the food. The food is awsome. This one star is for operation department at Dutch Pot. I recently was given back change for a hundred dollar bill and one of the $20 bill was counterfeit (fake). I advised them that I didn't notice rite away cause my money was folded and hadn't got to that fake bill yet. Trusting them even when I got my change back. I know there are honest working people. And most of them are very nice people. As a company $20 is nothing to you. I'm a loyal and faithful customer that goes there more than ones a week. If you didn't want to give back cash I understand but you should at least accommodate a loyal customer and give me at least $20 credit. Which would be fine since I frequently go there. Operations just told me "they cant do nothing" "I can go ahead and report it" "sorry" WoW. I probably wont be going back . At least not for a while because just upset. Hope thihey change there mind and do the right thing. They have my number. I would gladly turn this sad situation and gladly give them what they deserve witch is more stars.. Thank you for reading
August 16,2024 This is the second time this month I go from 9am to 9:30am and no akie and saltfish. Last time had to get callaloo with saltfish which was ok but I wanted akie. Today not even callaloo. So I had to go across the street to Goldenkrust. Guess what. Fresh pot of akie. Plenty for about 1 to 2 hours more to sell. And to top it off they also had hominycorn parige. I love that. So what you plan to do Dutchpot? Laking on the akie. Are you willing to loose customers to Goldenkrust? You might be able to loose 5 or 10 customers. But what happeneds when they start cutting hours and shifts due to less money coming into the business. Then you'll start worring? Don't let it get to that. I love your food but will go somewhere else if not satisfied. No matter how it taste. Please Dutchpot, step up your game . Stop lacking food. 🙏🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸🙏🇯🇲🙏🇯🇲🙏🇯🇲🙏🇯🇲
It is 11-2-25 08:45 AM Same old thing. Don't have Akie and saltfish. Who ever is running this store isn't doing a good job. Went across the street to Golden krust. They have a line of 20 people. Im pretty sure most of them just left Dutch Pot because they don't have Akie so early in the morning. The employees might not care but thats no less than $30 a person times 20 and the line is still long. It's 09:15 AM and still a line of 20. You must step up your game Dutch Pot. I like you but when no product, I'll definitely go across the street. Hope the owner sees this. That's the one that's going to...
Read moreI am a delivery driver and I was there picking up food today. When I got there the restaurant was pretty busy I cannot deny that. But regardless in most restaurants that I pick up food from there is a person to do online orders so it doesn't take away from the personnel at the restaurant. But it seems like that was not the case here or I don't know if somebody just wasn't doing their job or what the case is cuz I've never had this issue before and I pick up frequently from this restaurant. And it's not like I was impatient and constantly complaining I waited there over 20 minutes which most drivers would have canceled by the 5th or 10th minute. So it's not like I was being anxious and continuously complaining about the time it was around the 20th minute when the cashier had already told me a few times that it was coming and that's when I finally said it's been over 20 minutes it's been pretty long and that's pretty much all I said. The cashier then goes ahead and starts to bad mouth me to the customer and another employee. She stated that it's not their fault and the restaurant is very busy. So in other words if the restaurant is busy the online orders get pushed to the side is what she's trying to say and to me that is not only unprofessional but it is not right for the customers that are waiting at home especially when they have put in their order over 30 or 40 minutes ago. The restaurant customers and the online customers should be treated the same. Just because a delivery driver is picking up the food does not mean that they should get mistreated or bad mouthed just because they are asking about the order or saying it's taking a little long when the driver has been there over 20 minutes waiting patiently. I'm sorry but that's not a good fit for business you shouldn't be talking about people especially to another customer. I'm not trying to get nobody in trouble but at the same time I don't need to be disrespected when I'm just doing my job which does not pay me by the hour by the way. I didn't disrespect the cashier I've never disrespected anybody at this restaurant I've always had pretty good experiences so it was a little bit of a surprise to me that the cashier acted in this manner. I would understand if I was sitting there the whole time complaining then even though it is still a professional I would see more reason for...
