:calls to place an order: Me: "I'd just like normal pizza crust and sauce" Them: "White or Wheat?" Me: "White'd be normal, right? So white." Them: "Okay, white."
:gets pizza, calls back: Me: "So, uh, this is wheat." Same Employee: "I thought you said wheat!"
Anyway, I don't like wheat crusts at all, but even beyond that, the pizza just wasn't impressive enough to warrant the price. Moreover, the pizza looked the same size as a typical large (A large at Rudy's is supposed to be 16", rather than the usual 14"), and most of the pizza box space was empty.
So I took a measuring tape and measured it. The pizza wasn't cooked into a perfect circle, but the largest measurement I got on diameter was 14" (the smallest was 13"). So much for their "large" being a 16" that's "30% bigger than the competition!"
Moreover, the pizza arrived cold. It was presented at the door carried in its box alone, so I'm not sure if it was put in a heating pouch on the drive over, but I'm assuming it wasn't. It's not like I was expecting it fresh out of the oven, given that that the pizzeria was a bit of a drive from me, but this definitely wasn't properly temperature controlled.
So we get cold pizza that's smaller than promised with the wrong (and to my mind gross) crust. On the bright side, the ingredients [toppings and cheese] are all clearly decent quality (though somehow my requested green peppers turned into black olives).. and on the other side, the sauce and cheese tasted thoroughly flavorless- meaning all the pizza really had going for it flavor-wise were the very sparsely offered toppings- and the crust was dense and difficult to chew [beyond what you'd normally expect from flatbread or similar crust].
I can't say the restaurant is irredeemably terrible (as you'd expect from a one star review) but, at the same time, I do feel the one star review is fair- after all, almost nothing at the restaurant meets expectations. Also? The end of that second phone call? Yeah, it went not great:
Employee: "So, what do you want from me?" Me: "Well, I'm just asking if these are things I should be expecting on future orders, so I know whether it's worth buying from you all again or not." Employee: "Okay." Me: "Alright then. Thank you.. for your time."
Given the price of their pizzas, there's just no way I'm ever buying from them again with this quality of service and product. Best of luck to anyone who gives them a go. At the very least, I'd recommend not doing delivery. Not if you want your order hot and made correctly, at least.
As a final note, the photos I saw online from Rudy's pizza showed a thicker, more typical crust than what I got. If my pizza isn't an abberation, then you can expect more of a flatbread style from them than a typical American-style pizza crust. Then again, all the photos I found are of white crust, not wheat, so.. eh. Well, I wish I could comment on the white crust,...

So I selected cash and we made sure to be at rudys by the specified time. After showing up at 7:34pm which was the time the pizza was ready we had to sit there and knock on the window 2 times to get someones attention and when my husband went in the guy said well you should have called.. My hubby said didnt bring phone with.. Then another 10 min passed by and guy came up with pizza and receipt and said ohh it is exact change only.. He asked the guy any idea where he could run to get change quick and guy responded dumbfounded that he didn't know. And he told the worker we couldnt get the order then. And the worker nonchalantly said ok. We were weekly customers before and after covid and We have always loved this place until this experience.. But you need to update your online info cause there is nothing that states if you pay cash must be exact change.. And think about hiring people who actually care about...
Read moreWas visiting Lawrence, walking Massachusetts street, and saw Rudy's Pizzeria which is located below ground level and looks intriguing from the outside. Had planned to go to another Pizzeria a couple blocks away but when we got there were greeted by very loud music and just not the kind of atmosphere we wanted for eating. So back to Rudy's we went. Very thankful to have done so. The pizza was really good and even reheated the next day. It's a quaint little place, an interesting atmosphere with what appear to be remnants of other types of restaurants who have occupied the space in days gone by. They were even playing a kind of a jazzy type of music. Well until we were getting near to leaving. Then the loud rock music came on. Wouldn't have enjoyed the experience so much if that had been it the whole time. But overall I would certainly recommend...
