I wanted to like this place but there are a LOT of issues!
The older lady taking my order must've been having a bad day, she was visibly upset, and was very angry, sour, and impatient with me even though I was the only person in the store at the time. The second lady was nicer by comparison but I was already wishing I hadn't ordered by the time I paid.
I got the guava cake and for a 3x3 inch slice, it was DRY and HARD, not moist and fresh like how I had it last time I came here. Do not order the cake, it is very deceiving and you won't know until you've paid $5.50 to take their old food to the garbage where it should have gone in the first place.
I had the short ribs too and there was a healthy portion of meat which was the only good thing I can come up with. Unfortunately it was soggy and limp, feeling more like a boiled hot dog and less like fresh charred ribs off if the grill that I am accustomed to from any other Hawaiian grill. I can't tell if it was from swimming in the teriyaki sauce all day or if they needed a little more time on the grill.
Last but not least, the high tables were sticky and the trash cans were full despite how rather clean the rest of the room was. I think this is just how the restaurant was today and not how it normally is.
The $31 hole in my pocket for one person was quite pricey and the service and food I got in return was pitiful and a let-down from my expectations coming in. I hope they'll do...
Read moreNow listen...normally I don't leave reviews anywhere for anything....but this place here....this place is different. I went here with my girl and she ordered the chicken katsu w/ OTAI and I ordered the Loco Moco.
The Food:
The first thing that came was the OTAI and O MY SWEET HEAVENLY FATHER. The delectability of that drink could only be described as the nectar of the God's.
Then came the Katsu. Now I live in The Bay so I have had many Katsu's and didn't expect much. As I took that first bite with a little Katsu Sauce, that light yet firm crunch was filled with blissful excellence. That left me wanting (and reaching into my girlfriends food) for more
In the middle of that came my Loco Moco. I won't lie for a good minute in the bay I was eating Loco moco once a week so I was familiar with the taste, so I knew what to expect. Then I bit into it and a single tear rolled down my eye like Denzel Washington in Glory, enough said.
The Atmosphere:
Fantastic, it gives off a very homely vibe and with the flavors of that food I see why.
Serving size: Going to your grandma's house and she asks "you hungry baby"
Price: Fantastic
Rating: 10/10
Honestly since I've been back in the bay I've been chasing the flavor profile I experienced here and sadly I have not found it. However, next time I'm in Utah know...
Read moreOverall disappointment Let's start from the beginning. I walked into the store about 5:55 pm (store closes at 8pm) the young lady at the counter looks up sees me and lets out a sigh of frustration while cocking her head back and then letting her head fall forward. I decided to let it pass seeing that she was young and this was probably her first job. I took a minute to look at the menu the whole time the young lady sat staring at me tapping her foot to a clearly audible level. I decide what I want and go to order but I did have a question about the menu. I was a little reluctant to ask but figured this is the only Hawaiian place in Layton so I should probably ask if I plan on coming back. I asked the girl and she just stared at me blankly laughs at me then says no and walks away. It was now 6:05 and I was waiting for my food which I finally got at 6:57. I was hoping that with it taking so long it would be good food unfortunately it is the most tasteless food I have ever had. Doesn't even resemble Hawaiian food which I have greatly missed since...
