The Sunday Ritual That Ruined All Other Steakhouses For Me🥩
Ever had a dining experience so perfect it becomes your measuring stick for all others? That's what happened the first time I slid into a window seat at 801 Chophouse in Leawood. Now my Sundays have a sacred schedule: yoga, nap, and the best steak in Kansas City.
I used to think all high-end steakhouses were basically the same until 801's Sunday Supper menu came into my life. The moment you walk in, the classic 1920s steakhouse ambiance wraps around you like a warm blanket – all rich wood, white tablecloths, and that unmistakable energy of a place that takes its craft seriously.
My ritual begins with the 801 Wedge – a seemingly simple salad that somehow transcends its ingredients with a blue cheese dressing so creamy and flavorful it should be illegal in at least seven states! 😂 Then comes the star: a 6oz Filet Mignon De Burgo that's so tender you could cut it with a stern look. Paired with their garlic mashed potatoes and perfectly grilled asparagus, it's the kind of meal that makes conversation stop and eyes close involuntarily.
Meanwhile, my husband follows his own tradition: caesar salad (which he insists is the benchmark by which all others should be judged), the Mowi Salmon that converts even the most dedicated carnivores, and their housemade sorbet that somehow tastes more like the fruit than the fruit itself.
The experience is elevated further by their GreenCoat staff – professionals who understand the delicate art of attentive service without hovering. They remember your preferences, make spot-on recommendations, and somehow know exactly when you need them and when you don't.
Insider tip: Request a window seat in the bar area for the perfect blend of ambiance and people-watching. And don't skip the crème brûlée – that perfectly caramelized top giving way to silky custard is worth every calorie.🤤
Some people have Sunday football, others have family dinners – we have 801 Chophouse, where USDA Prime isn't just a grade of meat, it's a philosophy that extends to every aspect of the experience. After all, why settle for an ordinary Sunday when you can have one that's rare and well-done at the same...
Read moreI really, really wanted to give them five stars. Unfortunately, on the four occasions we've visited we have the same lackluster outcome with the steaks.
The steaks are supposed to be amazing to reflect the very high prices. On each occasion we've tried a different steak thinking that maybe we had just made a poor choice before. Every time we are disappointed in the flavor and the cook on our steaks.
During our most recent visit we started with the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail. It was absolutely amazing. The cocktail sauce was absolutely perfect and the cook on the shrimp was beautiful. Next we had the 32oz porterhouse. In the past we'd ordered filets and they'd always come out seared within an inch of their lives leaving the outside completely burned, bitter and dry, obliterating any flavor. We figured we'd get a much larger, much more flavorful steak this time that they'd have to cook slower so we got the 32oz porterhouse. Unfortunately the same thing happened. The outside was absolutely hammered - like it'd been dropped in a fire. The inside was VERY unevenly cooked. I understand, a bone-in steak is tough to get right, but for $115 you'd think they'd make an extra effort to pull it off. Ugh. The outside was completely black, bitter and dry, the center away from the bone was medium rare and the areas around the bone were blue rare. We didn't complain because I didn't want to waste more meat with them hammering it like they do because if they didn't get it right the first time, why would they get it right a second time? They must have a million degree searer in the kitchen and they leave the steak on it to cook the whole time.
Three stars because the service is always great, the atmosphere is wonderful, the sides and appetizers we've had have been great, but we've never, ever had a good steak here. Such a shame. If you want a good steak, go to the Ox in the West Bottoms. It's worth the drive for a steakhouse that gets the...
Read moreCame here to celebrate my birthday as I heard alot of rave reviews and it was one of the few places I saw I could get some A5 Wagyu steak. First and foremost, the steak was fantastic. Staff recommended getting it medium done but I think next time I'd get it as rare as possible.
Appetizer was the tuna tartare and that was fantastic. I expected it to be chewer but it was damn near melt in your mouth. Highly recommend.
Salad was the compressed watermelon. Having never had a salad with watermelon, let alone pistachio, it was really good.
Main course was 8oz of A5 Wagyu (this was $280 alone as it's $35 per oz ), some mushroom and broccoli. Overall it was a great but I do have some nitpicks. The way their steaks are done, there is a heavy char all over the meat. I imagine on a thicker cut this would be fine but on a more delicate cut like this, it loses alot of the flavor in the edges. Center where it was closer to rare was absolutely amazing and melt in your mouth. The real highlight, surprisingly was the broccoli. It was cooler to perfection with alot of crunch and flavor still in it.
Lastly, they comp'd me a desert as I listed this was for my birthday. Had the chocolate souffle and it was alright. It was a little too rich for my tastes after having the wonderful steak and tuna tartare.
Overall, I would go again but only if it was on someone else's dime. Expect to pay a minimum of $150 per person no matter what you get but it...
