Orchid used to be one of my favorite places in the LA area to go for sushi. While my veggie appetizer was delicious, my sushi was highly lacking and I will not be back if sushi is mg goal.
First WAY too much rice! I ordered a specialty maki roll that is a California roll in the center and topped with 3 kinds of raw fish (one of my favorites), think nigiri style over a maki roll. There was more rice than anything else. The center of the roll was just shy of being larger than a nickel what there was so much rice the piece itself barely fit in my mouth.
Second, I was once taught by a sushi chef from Japan that the trick to good sushi isnāt the fish but the rice. That the quality of the rice, consistency (how it was prepared) and amount make or break the sushi. On top of being way too much rice, the consistency was chewing and tasted off. It tasted as though they just grabbed regular old white rice and plopped it on... eww.
Third, the fish.... š¤ can I call it that? There was barely any on it! Each piece of fish was only a tiny sliver! Like MAYBE 1/8ā thick š even grocery store sushi is 1/4-1/2ā thick. This roll was $13! And not unique to this restaurant... Iāve never been shorted like that on this order before! And Iāve ordered this same thing many times in the past.
Lastly, I asked for a small dish of spicy Mayo (in hopes of making it taste some what normal)... I was charged $1.50 for it!
I will say that everything came out in a timely manner. Presentation was good. And restaurant was clean. If youāre looking for non sushi food itās still delicious.... just skip...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWow, where do I start? When I look back at my experiences at this restaurant I canāt help but smile. As a young sophomore at Bates College I was still trying to find my favorite restaurant in the Lewiston/Auburn area. A few friends decided on Orchid for a weekend retreat away from the local dining hall and figured Iād tag along and see what the buzz was about. At first I wasnāt sure what to order, but luckily a friend ordered the Crispy roll and I tried a piece-Wow! Little did I know my life would never be the same. For the better part of three years now I have gone to Orchid to enjoy my beloved Crispy roll. But the food isnāt the only this thatās great about this restaurant. The staff, location, and overall atmosphere is unparalleled. As my senior year winds down and I prepare to graduate, I canāt help but be disappointed that my life will take a direction that leads away from this great restaurant. So this is more than a review, but a sincere token of my appreciation for the years of quality food. Thank...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreYou truly cannot go wrong with Orchid. All of their food is excellent and the service is always great. Their sushi is phenomenal, and their entree options are equally delicious (especially if you're looking for spicy - try the 5-star Pad Thai!)
If you ARE looking for sushi - Orchid is hands-down the best place to go in the greater Lewiston/Auburn area. I would go as far as to say that Ming is one of the best sushi chefs I've had the pleasure of ordering from. His station is always impeccably clean, and his artful and dedicated approach ensures any sushi roll, nigiri, or sashimi he serves is the highest quality and crafted with the attention required to make it as fantastic as it always is.
Come in during lunch hours and sit at the bar. Bridget will take great care of you, and all of their staff are fascinating to talk to. Great people and even greater food. Couldn't...
