If you are looking for a historic, no frills and affordable experience (or specifically for a hotdog) then this is your spot. Right by the park, this family-owned business just celebrated 50 years under the current family leadership who's grandfather opened the original stand in the same location in 1908, later becoming the original permanent structure that is there today. You will most definitely meet the family when you visit. They have Hotdogs (the red ones) with a variety of toppings including, chilli dogs, burgers of a few kinds with toppings and combo meals, fried chicken and fish sandwiches (quick diner kind), regular sandwiches like grilled chees, ham and cheese, etc., hand cut fries (the day I went - in pics I see the frozen kind have been used too), big onion rings (hey! you get to choose either or both), and a full breakfast menu, with daily sweets (looked like peanut butter cup cupcakes when I visited) and specials. Wednesday's is a steamed dog for $1.50 a piece, I believe. Simones' offers soups, salads and more too (I didn't try on this visit). But most come here for the breakfast and the hotdogs, and the price. Sit at the counter to watch the action, grab a table or take it to go. Drinks are grab-n-go from the cooler. This is a family-run business that is a part of the community it serves. Sign the guest book and see who else...
Read moreI'm not exactly sure how this place gets such a good rating online or why they claim to be 'world famous' because my general impression of their lunch menu was less than favorable and I won't be returning to eat here.
My boyfriend and I ordered a Reuben sandwich and a loaded cheese hot dog to split. The Reuben sandwich was disgustingly greasy, dripping oil literally every single bite. We barely ate half of it between the two of us and threw the rest out.
The hot dog itself was cooked well and tasted decent, but the bun wasn't grilled or cooked so it was soggy from the toppings and cheese, making it a bit unpleasant to eat. Also, the bread itself didn't taste very fresh like it'd been sitting around a bit too long to serve to people.
And to top it off, both of us felt unwell a couple hours later, which is a sign of cross contamination (poor food handling/employees not properly washing hands) or foods not being refrigerated at proper temperature to keep from spoiling.
I imagine the only people who would enjoy this type of food are those that east fast/deeply fried food regularly and use that as their standard for...
Read moreHave had the 2 steamed dogs with chili on top for lunch (no breakfast); Beef dog with Fries, & just yesterday I had a Double CheeseBurger with Fries. A 20oz. drink of choice. All good filling items we all enjoy, whether our cholesterol likes it or not. Lots of locals stopping in, warm, friendly atmosphere, even if you're new to them. Home made soups, I understand (have not tried as yet,) are great. Just a wonderful place to land and have dine-in or take-out. Staff works very hard, remember you. More places like ? There are none - quite sad - to...
