Edit: I tried La Taquiza again last Sunday Sept 3rd and the difference in service was night and day. The server took our drink orders soon after being seated. She checked on us multiple times until we were ready to order. She brought the food out fast and then checked on us again many times throughout our meal. It was my first 5 āļø service treatment there. Iām so happy that I get to update this to a full 5 star experience. Because the food was still fantastic and it was great to have matching service. To me this is the top Mexican restaurant in Lexington.
Original (posted June 2023): Iāll start with the food is 4-5 stars. They use fresh ingredients, most everything is cooked in house, and itās not overly seasoned or salty.
The service is not good. 1-2 stars. The first time I went with my kid and I got 3 different tacos averaging $5 each and my kid got 3 steak and cheese tacos and a side of rice and beans. And we had 2 waters. The total came out to over $50. I was surprised.
What had happened was that there is not a steak and cheese taco on the menu. My kid had ordered 3 tacos off the main menu that showed they had cheese. He asked for all other items to be removed. They waitress didnāt tell us that steak and cheese didnāt exist and also didnāt explain that she was putting it as 3 street tacos with an additional cheese charge of $3 per taco. So each of his tacos were $8. He had a $30 meal with the side while mine totaled to about $15.
The 2nd visit was yesterday evening. They close at 9 and we showed up at 8:15. They promptly sat us, but we waited 20 minutes before they took our order. And we had to go and tell them they hadnāt taken our order. Despite the fact that we were sitting inside. And that they passed by us, with closed menus sitting in front of us, a dozen times!
Eventually someone came and took our order. And unlike the first time, he did say thereās no steak and cheese tacos and they would need to do a $3 per taco up-charge for cheese. So my kid instead ordered the Quesabirria which is 3 shredded beef tacos with cheese and fixins. And I had the Enchiladas which also have 3 of them with beans and rice and a side salad. Total w tax before tip = 29.66
So while we havenāt had great service on any visit, the food is excellent! Maybe the service will improve in time. Itās worth it to keep trying bc the food really is superb. Iād say the food ranks as one of the best if not the best Mex in town.
I say most things are cooked in house because the ice cream is still Savās. Which to me is legendary ice cream. You will never go wrong with Savās ice cream. There was no reason for them to change that out.
So in closing, I do highly recommend trying La Taquiza. But watch their service. If you feel like they forgot about you, they probably did. Save yourself some time and donāt wait longer than your first thought of that to go get their attention. And make sure they enter what youāre ordering correctly. And watch for that added cheese charge as many tacos on the menu donāt actually have cheese. Donāt assume it does.
While this all likely sounds like a bunch of gripes, it really is spectacular food. Work through issues the best you can to get that incredibly delicious food into your belly. It is sooo worth it!
Iāll update the stars as I keep going there. I hope I can get it up to 5 stars at some point. Did I mention how amazing...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFirst of all, the food here is excellent and plated really well. Authentic Mexican is really hard to come by but these folks bring the heat.
Secondly, I would recommend not going between lunch and dinner. I was the only customer there and they clearly had not prepped any silverware because I was not given any. Or napkins. There was also really unclear instructions on the salsa bar because I didnāt know I would need to pay for it. Needless to say, the service could be improved.
Third, dining inside was definitely better than eating on the patio in 90 degree heat. But it was still warm. I wanted to stay longer to enjoy my meal but I was sweating about 20 minutes after arriving. Maybe take weather into consideration before dining here.
Overall, I would eat here again. Just maybe when it cools down a bit. They have a lot of really delicious looking options.
Pictured are the Quesabirrias and Pork Mole Taco. Also had the Chorizo Queso but that went quicker than I could...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreYes, yes, yes!! Their food brought all kinds of memories from my childhood in Mexico. The food was simply amazing. I had a delicious authentic Mexican breakfast made with real ingredients. I could taste the Chile ancho, garlic, and spices in my chilaquiles salsa, eggs cooked to perfection, chicken tender and juicy, yummy! The grilled cactus was great, and the salsa bar is a nice plus. I love that they have all kinds of delicious salsas to spice up my food. My son had an enormous torta filled with steak, chorizo avocado, cheese and fresh lettuce, tomato, and onions, and shared with all of us. Their fried beans are amazing as well. My children and I were very happy to find this gem in Lexington. Please give it a try. My only complaint is that the chairs are super uncomfortable and small. Please change them. Everything else is great, the restaurant is beautiful, the ambiance and the service are great. Thank...
