Perk 101 — Restaurant in Lincoln City

I’ve been to so many local, small business coffee shops I’ve become quite the connoisseur. I also love a well done coffee, so I’m always scouting out new places. My recommendations for Perk 101:

first and foremost, keep up the friendly manner, and welcoming attitude! Biggest and most important thing for a coffee shop:) Get WIFI. Becoming a popular hub for online work, is HUGE. More comfy seating. Figure this is a work in progress but nevertheless it’s worth mentioning. The building doesn’t have a ton of character. Lots of popular coffee shops have a “brand.” A perfect example of what I’m talking about can be seen at “off-beat coffee” in Salem. People love themes, and having it throughout the coffee shop gives it character and fun. Some sort of beach theme would be appropriate and cool, but do something you’re passionate about. There’s a lot of paintings on the walls, which is a great start! Coffee making. If you are going to call yourselves a coffee shop, a good espresso is vital. The espresso we had was watery, and the steamed milk was not creamy, it was just airy. Equipment seems to be there, but skills are not. Measure your espresso, time it, and heat up milk appropriately to the correct temp. I’ve made a better cappuccino with an aero press and quite literally just whipping a glass of milk. So much free resources out there on YouTube. It’s a scientific art, not something that’s easy or quick to learn.

Nevertheless, the guy who took our orders was super kind and friendly, it’s obvious how much he cares about this place and his customers. Some of the best customer service we’ve seen. Once again, keep it up! I love supporting local places and I want yall to crush it.

Perk 101 is a true hidden gem, and that’s thanks to Toby—whose warmth, hospitality, and passion shine through in every corner of this place. When my mom (who uses a walker), my sister, and I stopped in, Toby came right out to open the door and personally helped my mom down the handicap ramp. That level of kindness is rare, and we were so touched by his thoughtfulness.

The coffee (Pioneer Joe) is absolutely top-notch—rich, smooth, and full of character. And the pastries? Made in-house by Toby’s family—fresh, yummy, and unforgettable. You can taste the love and tradition in every bite.

But it doesn’t stop there—the vibe is just as good as the food. The decor is fun and funky, with records for sale, local art on the walls, and a playful, welcoming spirit throughout. The bathroom door features a mermaid and a centaur with a sign that says: “Whatever, just wash your hands.” It’s clever, inclusive, and perfectly sums up the feel-good, no-judgment energy of the whole place.
