Old review Usually would do 5 stars, because as pedestrian and a bit run down as Donut Wheel appears, they are the best donuts in the Bay Area, and we try every donut place we come across. Ditch the gourmet expensive ones that are popping up all over. THESE are REAL donuts. but last night they were out of some of our favorite donuts. Hence the 4 stars. I understand. It's a small family operation like Liguria Bakery in SF. They run out. So be prepared to not have you first choice if you're there late Saturday night. . Still worth the trip if you're in the Livermore area, or passing by on 580 to the Sierras or to home. Update July 1, 2023. We still believe in the wheel. It's a family operation and they do have staffing issues on occasion. While listed closed at 10pm Saturday night, they're only closing long enough for the clerk to get his father in law and they will be open all Saturday night long. Ask the clerks for updates on hours. Things do change. Remember, the early birds get the stuffed donut holes. Please patronize a great family owned place. Covid screwed things up and more sales will help out. More donuts...
Read moreDonut Wheel is my all time favorite childhood spot growing up. We would get it from breakfast; we would get it for lunch sometimes. We would get it for snacking in the middle of the night because they never close! We always get a box or two on road trips as well. It is a old shop now but never gets old in my heart. For just $10 you can get a baker’s dozen of donuts. Can’t find that anywhere nowadays!
I love love love love the hot plain old fashioned all my life! It’s doughy, it’s dense, it’s slightly crispy on the outside but there’s something about it that is very addicting to me. The original glazed and the donut holes are great too. Always flavorful. The Donut Wheel has got it down with the perfect combination of salt, sugar, dough and fried just right. They are best when they first batch comes out and consumed right away.
The staff here are always sweet and helpful. They use to know me by name and face in my younger days but I’ve became a stranger every since I moved away. They old lady still works there. She’s not the friendliest person but I’ve known her for so long; I honestly vouch that she means wells. All and all; This place still has that great old-time-feel to it. One of the few placed left my my childhood that makes me feel at home when I come back to visit...
Read moreOld 50s diner donut shop with decent coffee. Fantastic fresh and delicious old fashioned maple doughnuts, fair prices on individual pastries. Went today for the first time, little hole in the wall place, you know the type, small and run down with the best food and loyal regular customers. We were the only ones in there today- myself and my two elderly 90 year old clients. The whole place was dirty as far as wet spilled on floors and tables and I saw a few flies behind the glass with the doughnut case. I asked the lady in there if I could have a wet rag and I'll wash off the tables after she said she didn't have time to clean it. But then she gave a dirty look and siged and kinda pushed passed me to leave a mess but clean the one table the three of us was sitting at, and left spilled coffee on the ground behind my clints' chairs to slip on. Could have been a fluke of a day, cuz like I said it was our first time in there. They take cash only but have an ATM next to the register. It was a little off putting at all the trash cans, there were displays of all kinds of Christian...
