Hubby is a truck driver and as anyone who spends a kit of time in a truck knows good food with truck accessibility is becoming rare. This makes Old Town Grill an even better find. We live in Tennessee but when hubby ran out of hours this weekend in London, KY I grabbed my dog, hopped in the car and drove to meet him at the truck stop next to OTG. We spent the night at a motel at the next exit, did some errands then came back to drop some stuff off at his truck and plan our lunch before the doggo and I headed back home. After looking through reviews we decided to give Old Town Grill a try. It was right there, so why not? If we like it then he’s got a new spot to eat when he’s driving through the area. Well, let’s just say, he’s got a new spot. Lol We arrived during a decent little rush, there were three tables waiting ahead of us but they got us seated rather quickly at a booth in the bar area. Our waitress, Jordan, was on the ball. She kept our glasses full and had food out at the perfect times. Appetizer, followed by hubby’s salad and then our entrees. Sound simple, I know, but Texas Roadhouse in London couldn’t grasp that concept last night and we ended up with everything on the table at once. We ordered the soft pretzels with cheese dip for an appetizer and let me tell you, these were the best soft pretzels I’ve ever had. Instead of being coated with tons of salt, they had a Parmesan garlic topping that paired wonderfully with the beer cheese. Hubby ordered the beef stroganoff and I got the “sinful chicken”. Once he stirred the stroganoff (the sauce settled a bit in transport to the table) and added a touch of salt it was great! There was a lot more meat in there than it appeared at first glance and he was unable to finish the entire dish. My chicken.. uh yeah, I see where it got it’s name. Chicken breast grilled to perfection, topped with spinach, cheese and a Cajun Alfredo sauce. It’s not spicy, but added a wonderful flavor that is unlike any chicken I’ve had anywhere. This sat atop a bed of long grain and wild rice. I also had the potato cakes as a side and yum! They’re loaded mashed potatoes made into little cakes and fried and made a great addition to the chicken dish. Despite sitting in the bar section (I believe they call it the lounge) it wasn’t overly noisy and service was very quick. The location gave us the opportunity to get a good look at the rest of the restaurant and it’s cute! It’s got a kind of rustic log cabiny vibe. Hubby said he’ll definitely come back next time he’s in the area and I hope to get a chance to...
Read moreI've eaten at my hometown Old Town Grill three different times now. So this isn't a one off review. The first time I ate there was just after the place first open. The food was descent. I really enjoyed the buffalo sauce. It did take awhile to get our food but the server was entertaining. Overall, I wasn't overly impressed and it was several months before we ate there again. The second time we ate there we had a terrible wait for our food. I'm guessing it was over an hour we waited. I'm not talking about an hour to get a table, I mean it was an hour between the time we were seated until we had food other than bread. Once we did get our food I remember thinking that it was a little worse than the first time and just overall lacking. The last time I went there was last weekend. I hadn't been there in probably over a year. After one fair review and one poor review the place just left an overall bad taste in my mouth. However my niece was in town and it's where she wanted to go. Once again we had a horribly long wait of about 45 minutes to one hour before we got any food besides bread. I believe there's a season that a year or more after opening they implemented a 15 minute or it's free lunch menu. They had to have lost a ton of business off their ridiculous wait times. I'd also guess that anything they're able to make in 15 minutes or less is probably frozen product and not fresh food.
Two people of my party of three ordered steaks. They were frankly just unacceptable. Any owner who approves of selling a gnarled up piece of meat that horrible looking shouldn't be allowed to own a restaurant. I know it wasn't a one off thing because my party ordered two steaks altogether and they were both horrible. I personally had the fried shrimp and asked if they could make it buffalo because I'd enjoyed there buffalo sauce previously. While the (frozen) shrimp were cooked they tossed them in cold buffalo sauce. My entree was barely warm when I got it with a cold sauced shrimp. Their potato chips were too thick, too hard and far too unseasoned.
The one thing we did enjoy were the desserts. I have no doubt the desserts were not homemade but they were good pre-made desserts. We ordered three and all three were good. I personally will never be going back to the OTG again simply off principle but for anyone else out there who's still thinking about it, I will only recommend them for...
Read moreUpdate to my last update: we gave her another shot and had a better experience, the terrible hostess was not there this time and our server was so sweet. The cheese wedges came out as empty tombs (cheese was all melted out) but they remade them with an apology. Update: been a while since we have been back down 75, looking forward to a great meal again. Unfortunately the hostess couldn't be bothered to look up from her phone to tell us there was an inexplicable 20 minute wait to be seated at 4:30 pm on a Thursday. Debated aloud just placing an order to go and wait for that. To which she said do you want a menu or something, then said I think the kitchen is backed up so that probably wouldn t be any faster. Don't think she looked at us once.
Walked to Wendy's next door and got very cheerful customer service and didn't feel like a burden to the employee when we walked in.
We stopped in on a Friday night as it was convenient next to a truck stop. They were busy but the service was quick and the food was great. We had the appetizer that was on special, fried cheese. It was fresh and homemade with great flavor. I ordered the sinful chicken as it was in several other reviews, it was better than expected! I had the potato cakes which were loaded baked potato fried cakes that were yummy. My husband got one of the burgers and he said it was great, cooked to order how he liked and very juicy, he had the sweet potato fries as his side. And he got some wings to go. I had about half my food left for lunch the next day.
Overall we were pleased, and in and out fast so we could get back on the road. Our bill was about 60 bucks with tip. Our server Jamie was new but did a great job, we were seated in the bar and every table was full. I forgot to take pics but we will definitely come back when we are traveling down 75. Truckers also note the truck stop next door has plenty of parking and their DEF was cheap!
Edited to say we stopped by again for lunch and food was fantastic and service was great. Tried the spinach dip with homemade fried flour tortilla chips and it was sooop good. Patty melt and fries were delicious and the Nashville hot chicken and chips was messy but good with a sweet and spicy flavor that wasn't too hot.
A breath of fresh air these days to have good food and...
