Sometimes good things come to those who wait. And sometimes you have to wait a ridiculously long time- like 45 minutes to get our food.
I find it hard to even write a review for Awash, but I do understand that when you are understaffed, it is impossible to give good service. When we arrived, there was a full restaurant, with one cook, and one server. There were also some mistakes with our order, and we were almost never checked in on during our meal.
That being said, the food was pretty good! We had the Veggie Combo and the Kitfo Beef. Food is served on a huge circular tray, and is eaten with your hands by scooping it up with a spongy injera bread.
Overall, I really loved the consistency and sourness of the injera. I love eating with my hands, so that was exciting as I did my best to not spill all over myself. Great success.
Our kitfo tasted in a way like a Tom Yum soup in the Thai variety, sour and spicy. This was my favorite part of the meal.
However, I find the taste compass of Ethopian food directionally myopic in the sour category. I really could use something more savory, or even more spicy to balance out the overwhelming sourness I found to be always in the background with the injera.
In conclusion, if you are coming here, expect a hole in the wall experience, and be prepared to wait. The good news is that the price reflects this and you can easily walk out of here for under $20...
Read moreMy family has been looking for a new regular Ethiopian place after our old favorite Ibex closed. We've tried three or four places and this place was a clear winner!
The food was rich and deep in flavors. We had the veggitarian combo and a beef and chicken dish. We wanted the fish as that was the best dish at Ibex, but they were out.
The meat was crispy as like it was flash fried which gives it a great texture with the sauce and spongy injira.
The injira had a great texture and subtle flavor. It did come out cold and we would have preferred it warm. The staff always keep us stocked so there was no pause in enjoying the great food
The clientle appeared to be a lot of locals which made for a warm atmosphere and suggested the food was fabulous before we even sat down.
The interior appears recently renovated, it was clean and modern. The bathroom sink was great! Good water pressure, hot water, and beautiful bowl sink.
I totally recommend this place, especially if you haven't had Ethiopian before, this will be a great...
Read moreA friend brought me here for drinks and to watch Thursday Night Football. Very comfortable and friendly environment. I sat at the bar and Rahel, the most friendly bartender on the West Side took our orders. I started off with a glass of Hennessy and watched football and baseball since they have 2 TVs! I then ordered the grilled chicken (4 medium size boneless breast) and spaghetti with spinach on the side. No lie, this was the best chicken I’ve ever eaten. Definitely the most juiciest. the seasonings on The spaghetti was new to me but it tasted so good that I couldn’t stop eating it. The spinach was so fresh and soft and tasty. I’m definitely going back since it’s around the corner from me. It was my first experience at a Ethiopian restaurant and I’m glad I went here. Great service and conversation with complete strangers, Great food, Hennessy and sports on tv. I never write reviews and nobody there asked me to. I just had to shout them out because I really had a good time...
