This place is located in a typical LA area but is a total hole in the wall. It's an order at the front and we'll bring you take out or just drop it off at your table casual kinda place. We came on Wednesday night at 8pm and it was pretty empty.
We ordered the small combination deep dish pizza for two and it took 40 minutes to come out (typical for a deep dish pizza place). I read some reviews before coming and heard they had free corkage so I brought a bottle of red wine. It was opened with pleasure by the guy at the front and i asked if he wanted a glass. He didnt drink but one of the cooks happily obliged. Pour him a glass and we sat and waited at a table outside drinking the wine. The pizza came out 40 minutes later and there were 4 big slices. We each had two slices and were super full. The pizza itself was pretty dam good. Plenty of oozing cheese that had a rich texture. The sausage was flattened out so you can have some on every bite which was great. The crust was the perfect crispyness and the sauce was really tomatoey.
Overall, good pizza but i prefer Masa in Echo park slightly more. Will be...
Read moreMy first time visiting Hollywood Pies was a blast. It can be easy to miss if you're driving on Pico Blvd. It's a small, nondescript place, but the food packs a punch. Some say it's the best Chicago deep dish outside of Chicago, and the food certainly doesn't disappoint. I haven't had too many authentic deep dish pizzas around LA, so Hollywood Pies is a golden find. I had the Chicago Classic, which is a popular pie with ricotta cheese and sausages. I also had the Angelino, which is more of a veggie style pizza with delicious artichoke hearts. Wow, the ingredients are fresh. I especially loved their sauces, their whole milk mozzarella cheese, and the tomato sauce is out of this world! Really tasty San Marzano tomato sauce they use here which is to die for! The pizza is so thick that after 2 slices, I am done.
In all, this is one place you can't go wrong with. If you are wanting to try a slice of Chicago here in LA, Hollywood Pies is it! If you want to see my YouTube video of me here at Hollywood Pies to see what this place is like, you can visit my channel called...
Read moreI am a transplant . . . and have lived in the cities that actually do pizza right. Los Angeles, in general, does not. Don't tell me about Pizzanista or Purgatory or Mulberrry St or Abbott's. They good (maybe) but not great and certainly nothing I'd ever write home about.
In other words, Los Angeles, is a pizza desert.
Unless, of course, you consider Hollywood Pies. No, it's not Lou Malnati's or Pizzeria Due or Giordanos or Pequod's or even Burt's (what's up NoCoast friends?!) but it's damn good and the closest thing to real Chicago pizza. Beyond deep dish . . . venturing into the stuffed pizza. It's very, very good.
No, it's not East Coast pizza but that's the point. Go try Hollywood Pies. If you don't like it fine . . .just don't make an excuse like "NY pizza is real pizza." Just own up to the fact that you have bad taste and be...
