Since Seabirds closed up the street, Hillhurst has been bereft of a generous vegan restaurant, and we're lucky to have such an opulent new destination.
I've dined in twice for both dinner and lunch and had great experiences both times. Was greeted by the host, Bridgett (sp?), who was very welcoming and friendly and hospitable, seated me quickly, and set a great tone for my visit.
To say that the meal at Civico has challenged my preconceptions about vegan cooking is a gross understatement. It has rocked me to my core.
Vegans and vegetarians are very lucky to have Civico in Los Feliz. They have a number of delicious and inventive dairy- and animal product–free components, the likes of which I could never dream of: house-made baked almond ricotta, bechamel, and parmiggiano, and impossible ragu — just unparalleled vegan inventions going on at Civico. It rules. What a bounty.
For dinner, I had the fiori di zucchine (lightly fried squash blossoms, caponata and tomato sauce), which I've thought about every day since. I also had the deconstructed cannoli (with almond ricotta and chocolate chips) for dessert. WOW.
Alejandro was my server for dinner, and he was super accommodating and communicative and offered great recommendations in as far as cocktail/mocktail recommendations and his favorite dishes on the dinner menu. He was awesome.
On another visit, I've had the vegan tiramisu for takeout (ladyfingers, cashew mascarpone), which was so tasty. I endeavor to try the full dessert menu. This sets such a high bar for vegan dessert options when dining out.
I took a family member to try out the new lunch menu, and we opted for the panini selection (the panino vegetariano, with imported burrata, heirloom tomatoes, zucchini blossom, and basil, with added prosciutto; the panino vegano, with eggplant, zucchini, sun-dried tomatoes, and olive pate; and the barbabietole salad, with red beets, arugula, red lettuce, feta cheese, oranges, walnuts, honey, Modena balsamic reduction, and EVOO). A pitch-perfect lunch to eat on the sidewalk during a beautiful sunny afternoon in LA. What more could you ask for.
Aria was our server, and he was terrific and helpful as we navigated the new lunch menu and the specific dietary accommodations of my party. The service here is as good as you could ask for, and Aria really nailed it.
It's an ideal place to bring an out-of-town visitor or family member. And not just for the vegan options, since it excels as an Italian restaurant as well. The vibes are immaculate. Bridgettt, Aria, and Alejandro are awesome. I will be returning to Civico soon,...
Read moreI like to plan ahead for certain events because I know how busy businesses get. We showed up 15 minutes early to our reservation to check in so the staff knows we made an effort to show up early and don’t have to wonder if we are a now show. Told the check in employee that we were there and that we’ll wait outside until our reservations were ready. I understand waiting 10 minutes for our seats while staff cleans and sets up our table. We waited over 40 minutes for our reservation while other parties got seated on later reservations. Even a group of four got seated before us when their reservation was later. The lady even had time to go outside and make a phone call for 10 minutes after they got seated. I was being patient and tried to be understanding and didn’t want to stress the staff out more.
We eventually got seated after I had to ask how much longer it would be, we were the last party standing outside before we got seated. I was so upset that I didn’t even order a drink, we were holding off on eating because we wanted to enjoy the food. Once seated we waited another 15 minutes for a waiter.
We ordered the zucchini and it came cold and the cheese wasn’t melted so we didn’t eat it. Our dishes finally arrived and gave us the wrong plates and the food was cold, so I let my family pick what they wanted from the plates they brought us because we didn’t want to wait anymore for service.
When we go to dinners we’ll spend around $300+ with food and drinks. This was the first time I wanted to leave a restaurant as soon as possible. Felt like a second class citizen with less than mediocre service. I was looking forward to dinner here, that I even had called a week ahead to ensure our reservation was...
Read moreWow! I don't do many reviews but this place is SO amazing in every way. First off they are so very welcoming, they make you feel that they are genuinely happy to have you and immediately attentive when you arrive. This attentiveness and hospitality lasted throughout the entire experience. Building on that last point, this was a dining experience, not just a meal out. Our server Aria was very personable and provided great service. On to the food, we all agreed that it was the best meal since we ate at a Michelin restaurant in Italy! The menu has a vegan section that is extensive and absolutely delicious. We highly recommend the chickpea and pistachio pate. The complementary focaccia and pesto was warm and is so delicious. We had the gnocchi, pasta arribiata, cod, and the pappardelle with short ribs entrees. All the pasta is made in house and was perfect! Every one was cooked to perfection. The gnocchi were little heavenly pillows, with an incredible cream sauce. The cod was so good with a delicious sauce. Oh and the beat salad was so fresh. An excellent selection of wine is offered. Of course we had to try the desserts, we had the Delizia al Limone and the profiteroles. The chocolate on the profiteroles was amazing not too sweet and so creamy smooth. The lemon dessert was light, airy and just right. I almost forgot to mention the vibe of the place. It is so welcoming, the lighting is just right, really liked the feel of the restaurant. Do Not Miss this place for an amazing...
