Impro Theatre — Attraction in Los Angeles

I've been studying improvisation for thirty years and I can say without hesitation that Impro is a very special place. First and foremost their main company ensemble is one of the top in the U.S. and likely the world. Their space work, use of language, playfulness to the point of palpable danger, and writer's mindset is as invigorating and refreshing as any good piece of theatre should be. Secondly, as an experienced improviser I was very pleased that I was able to audition into an appropriate level for me and I have to say I was blown away by the skill and talent of the other students there. I love how Impro teaches the improviser to think like a writer; not that they should script the scene, but that every bit of dialogue, movement, and space work should be performed with the idea that the playwright wrote it because it's important... it has meaning. Unlike many other improv schools I've been to they employ techniques that groundbreaking theatre makers use such as Viewpoints and the Circles Of Presence; no wonder they are more and more being regarded as a theatre company and not just an...

I'm reviewing Impro Theatre as a participant in one of their intro improv classes that my husband and I recently took. I truly wish this improv school got more recognition! You always hear about UCB or Groundlings, but Impro Theatre has SOUL and you don't feel like you are just another cog in the wheel of their system. (Just a note, we took the intro Groundlings class the very next week to compare) The experience we had in just our first 3 hour class at Impro Theatre was so inspiring and incredibly fun. Our instructor Ryan already had us doing some really amazing scenes and connection practices on our day one! Not just ice breaker games. We felt like we were actually using our brains. THIS IS THE SCHOOL TO GO TO IF YOU WANT TO STUDY IMPROV. You will develop a better foundation in the truest form of impro that will help you become the best improvisor.
