I have so much to say, but to keep it concise and to put the bottom line up front, Jellyman has really good beverages.
Upon arrival, you are greeted by mid-century-modern-nautical decor, with an overhanging canoe, and a fisherman peeking over the side to say hi. Passing the seating area and through the doors, a Jellyman Monster (?) materializes as you check out the menu and place your order. I have no idea what any of this means, but the subtext suggests there is a story that is a mix between The Old Man and the Sea and BioShock in the Funko Pop universe. There is so much intrigue and mystery before even deciding what drink to order.
My friend and I ordered the Peanut Butter and Jelly. Man (PBJ) and the Yuan Yang. The PBJ was a shock to my taste buds, with the overwhelming tartness and sweetness of (I think) grape jelly upfront, then the creaminess of the peanut butter to mellow you out, and finally an after taste of toasted bread to round out the pallet. The Yuan Yang was a more gentle ride, greeting you with a balanced blend of earthy black tea and brighter coffee for a refreshing pick-me-up after a big lunch.
When I go to boba shops, I usually request 50% sweetness. For both drinks, I ordered 100% sweet and although they were very sweet, I didn't think it was too much. The boba was just the right texture-chewy but not mushy and firm but not brittle.
It's important to note that this isn't a boba shop where you'd find your favorite flavors of milk tea. If I was craving boba, Jellyman probably won't make the top of the list to satisfy that craving. However, if you're in the mood to try something new Jellyman will be a delightful treat. Its enthralling decor and inspired drinks meet at the intersection of art and cuisine. It's places like this that make me love and appreciate LA.
I very much enjoyed the experience and will definitely be back to try the rest...
Read moreTL; DR-Mid boba spot and just visited for the hype but drinks are not that good. Just go to your favorite boba spot.
You really only came here for the Childish Gambino hype. This joint ain't nothing special except for the cool interior. The drinks are 7.50-9 dollars a piece. I've visited a lot of boba spots but i knew this ain't a usual boba spot. Glover has money so my expectations are high but with a side of caution.
Don't expect your regular boba spot drinks here. It is quite "experimental" and not in the good kind. The best one was the Peanut Butter and Jellyman but for $8, ain't no way. It's literally a peanut butter milk with diner grape jelly. Slap on Glover's brand on it and it's all of a sudden $8. I'll stick to Sunright.
My friends also got 4 other drinks.
Brown Sugar Milk, Strawberry Coffee Latte, Orange-Persimmon-Grenadine, and Yuan Yang.
Brown Sugar Milk was too sweet but it was good for its flavor. That's where the good stop.
Strawberry Coffee was wack because it was barely coffee and barely strawberry. Barely sweet. And barely good.
Orange Persimmon just tasted like orange juice with pomegranate seeds. Hated it.
Yuan Yang is I think their take on Coffee and Tea with milk. It was mid, too.
And the boba, too hard. Hard pass.
They need to do more restructuring their employees cuz there's one person taking order, 3 people making drinks in the back and one person in the order window waiting for drinks to come through to give to customers. I feel like they needed to send that person to the back to help with the drinks. Despite 3, it was quite a slow process. Was in line for 30 min and didn't get the drink 30 min later.
Overall, try it once so you can say "Ive...
Read moreJelly man is a beautiful space, different from most modern tea houses. It felt like an ephemeral experience to be in at the counter. If you look up, there’s a mix of natural, warm, and colored lights that create an unnatural ambiance. On the outside, you get a great Japandi vibe with lots of sunlight. Their branding is only apparent on the products (cups, napkins, and receipts) which makes it feel private and minimal. They have a few interesting choices, so go ahead and chat with the cashier about them 👍 We ordered the Thai limeade and yuan yang, both $6.75 (with one topping). The Thai limeade felt very sour at first, but it eases over time. The yuan yang is very, very good, blending the sweet, bitter, and creamy flavors of each element. Their straws are kinda crummy and the tip crumpled easily, making it hard to stab the lid. We were curious so we went back to order the Peanut butter jelly man, $8.00. With Peanut milk and grape jellies, it tasted pretty gross. Liquid peanut butter. Their toppings aren’t very sweet so the grape jelly doesn’t come with a strong tang to cut the fullness of the peanut milk. I’d skip it. Come try Jelly man before it...
