Updating from 3 stars to 1 star— I can’t with the customer service anymore. My first time back in four months after being a weekly customer for years and I was just scolded by the cashier for trying to exchange the incorrect breakfast order they gave me for the actual sandwich I ordered. My bad since I didn’t ask for a receipt, but don’t they keep a copy in their system? Note to future guests, check your to go order before leaving the store because, as the cashier let me know, they “don’t just give out free sandwiches.”
Old review: The food and baked goods here aren't too bad, but there are so many better spots in the city (even on the same street). What really sets a neighborhood place apart is customer service -- which this place has none. I've been here around 30 times this year because it is close to my house and the to-go bread isn't bad; and I actually appreciated the slow service when I dined in because it forced me to take a breath and enjoy my coffee instead of rushing. But the last 3 of my 5 orders were incorrect, and I understand how stressed the staff must be, but that means a typical 20+ minute wait time doubles... Maybe management should take better care of the staff so they aren't so burnt out? Or at least a free cup of coffee for the guest while they wait the second time (if the Tartine brand is determined to overwork everyone the result is felt by the guests).
Try Clark Street down the road, amazing all around bakery and service staff. Courage is great for bagels, but with longer wait times. Maury's is wonderful as well and their staff actually recognized me after my second visit! (I don't expect Tartine staff to recognize me from my countless visits since it opened, but I always have a large white fluffy dog with me who gets lots of attention--haa!!).
Tartine has made me feel like they just want my money, there's little pride in maintaining the brand, they abuse their staff, and there's no desire to invest in my neighborhood. I'm just a...
Read moreI have tried everything on Tartine's menu several times over and, frankly, my palate has grown tired of their breakfast items, but I like their savory scones and pastries so every time I am in Silverlake I go there to get one. This morning after buying a breakfast sandwich at Erewhon (within walking distance) I went there to get my scone and eat both in the warmth inside because it is cold out. The male busser whom I had not interacted with and had no need to interact with given that I had only purchased a scone had the nerve to tell me I couldn't eat at their tables because I had a breakfast sandwich from Erewhon. Congratulations! I will never spend money at your establishment again.
Response to owner: Don't care for it. You aren't sit down dining. It's not like I didn't buy your overpriced baked goods to justify my presence. I've spent more than enough through my continued patronage and you don't pay your staff enough for it to be their prerogative to enforce what you consider to be a social standard that isn't really because you are an open air non-fine dining establishment that takes customer orders AT THE REGISTER with no waiters, hostesses or dedicated seating. Nobody shows me any respect or etiquette in my industry and I'm the customer in yours. Your disrespect already ruined my appetite on a Sunday and I'm not the first review to call you out for treating your patrons disrespectfully. If you had simply allowed me to eat and left me alone I would have been finished within 10 minutes and you would have avoided a negative review in the...
