Magpies Softserve — Restaurant in Los Angeles

Best place in the valley to curve your late-night sugar fix. When it’s been a hot day (as it always is in the valley) and it’s creeping towards closing time… I can always count on Magpies.

They close at 10:00 PM AND have vegan soft serve?! Double win. Parking is very convenient.

There’s a rotating menu that’s featured prominently on a role of butcher paper as you enter. Now, there are both vegan and dairy options. I will only comment on the vegan options as those are the only ones I have tried… I’ve ever gone wrong with a small soft serve topped with brown sugar oats. Soft serve has a great velvety texture and is not overtly sweet as most vegan frozen deserts. They always try to overcompensate with extra sweetness… something I am not fond of in the least. Here, they do it rights. I must say, the last one I tried: vanilla latte, did stand out amongst the rest.

Okay, as great as the soft serve is, the crown jewel is their pie… think ice cream cake but, lighter.. Every slice I have tried has been heavenly. You definitely want to share the slices as they are too much for one person to handle. I love all kinds of ice cream. If it's ice cream I love it. So, sure, I sort-of enjoyed Magpies Softserve, but overall I found it just OK. Everyone in the group commented that the flavors tasted like they're skimping on their base, with the strength of flavor being only about maybe 75% of what you'd expect. My malted chocolate softserve didn't taste malted at all, and malted anything usually has a very bold, distinct flavor. And the hazelnut flakes didn't really taste like hazelnut, though added a nice crunch. Actually, were it not for the cone and the hazelnut flakes, my cone would've been sorely disappointing. Literally just a mile down in Encino on Ventura is Donutella, and their gelatos are soft, creamy and much more flavorful. Especially their Nutella gelato. I can't speak to the vegan options at this location; maybe it's the best vegan ice cream in town, I don't know. But as far as the regular ice cream, it's just so-so. Recently, I was out in the Tarzana area for work reasons, and I opened my map to see what was close by when I wanted a snack. I was very happy to see a Magpies Softserve location right next to where I was at. I live very close to their Silverlake spot and love their soft serve.

This visit I had the corn almond and sweet cream flavors. I had seen an IG recently about how they make own honeycomb candy, so I added that to the treat. Everything was amazing. They really do make some amazing soft serve flavors and treats.

This location is in a small strip mall, so it has parking and street parking. Tarzana and the area gets very hot, so make sure if you live or are visiting to stop by to beat the heat with a cool treat. Of course, ice cream doesn't have to be just for hot weather!
