I had gone to a school introduction meeting at my child's school for Alliance School by First and Rowan Street. The school administrators said they were going to get dinner. I did not expect a "dinner" dinner. I thought a dinner was like pizza, that they would give out. Instead, they wanted to bring out something healthy. And brought out a lot of bowls of healthy chicken and pork and milpa salad. Since there was hardly any other parents at the meeting, they invited me to take more than one bowl. So I took one of pork, chicken, and salad. This was the freshest cooked salad food I had ever tasted! The green salsa was excellent! I drank it from the 1.5 oz container they had it in. The sellable pic, was missing six slices of avocados which I ravenously ate. The chicken was juicy, grilled, beautifully spiced, and one of the best tasting chickens from a Latino grill. Excellent food and excellent taste. I will certainly come back here again. Thank you you Alliance Middle School for introducing Milpa to us. It's a gem in the east side!

We hired Milpa Grille to cater dinner for our wedding reception in Boyle Heights and they were incredible!! We chose a three-taco option (birria, brisket, and fish) and all of them were amazing. Our guests were raving about how much they loved the tacos. It was also beautifully plated with edible flowers and blue corn tortillas. They were not just willing, but expertly able to meet our requests for food service to accommodate one huge table that seated 75 guests. They kept the tacos coming the whole time, prepping them as-needed to keep the food warm, refilling platters and keeping a close eye on the table and where replenishing was needed.

Ana and the whole time were very professional and easy to work with. When planning a large event like this it's hard to express the impact that has - it was such a relief to know that they had everything under control. They also went above and beyond what we hired them for. For example, when things changed during the event they even helped us wash all the forks for dessert (this was completely out of their scope) and they stayed later than planned since dinner lasted longer than we expected.

They also helped us prepare before the event with printed menus (with ingredients list for our guests) as well as coordination on platter sizes, a walk through of the space, and answering questions about food allergies, etc.. We are so grateful that Milpa Grille catered our wedding and took care of our guests. We love their ethos and the way they connect with the community. Connecting our community was what our wedding was about and they were the perfect people to support that.

Thank you again, Ana and the...

Review of Milpa Kitchen: More Style Than Substance?

I recently visited Milpa Kitchen on a Sunday, and while the space itself has a clean, curated aesthetic that’s clearly built to attract foodies or those looking for vegan/vegetarian options, the overall experience left quite a bit to be desired.

To start, the Sunday menu is extremely limited—only offering burritos and tacos. While a focused menu can sometimes be a good thing, in this case it felt more like a restriction than a specialty. The brisket burrito I ordered was overly greasy and, unfortunately, underwhelming in flavor. Given the portion size and quality, the prices felt steep; $65 for 2 burritos, 1 order of tacos, coffee and tip. It’s the kind of meal that leaves you wondering what exactly you’re paying for beyond the branding.

One small but noticeable detail: the cafĂ© de olla, traditionally a rich and spiced Mexican coffee, was only available with non-dairy milk options like oat or almond milk. While it’s great to offer plant-based choices, having no dairy option at all felt unnecessarily limiting, especially for a beverage that traditionally relies on whole milk for its signature flavor.

Overall, Milpa Kitchen feels like it’s tailored to a very specific crowd—those who prioritize aesthetic presentation and trendiness over value and substance. If you’re looking for food to compliment your selfies on Instagram or TikTok, this place might hit the mark. But if you’re after a satisfying, well-priced meal with depth and tradition, it...

My friend and I decided to try this place since it's by our house and honestly did not give me a good impression. For starters they didn't have certain food items bc they were taking a large catering order which is understandable but if you're going to have a large catering order then put a sign up letting customers know which items are available and which are not.

2nd - Cashier seemed like she woke up with a hangover, looked like she straight up got up from her bed and went to the register, not a good look.

3rd - Tables outside were dirty full of crumbs and salsa which I'm assuming were from a previous customer, they should invest in someone cleaning the tables as customers leave etc.

4th - this place seems to cater to Hipsters that don't live or grew up in the community, it's sad that they do not cater to our BH community.

5th - coffee was bland, nothing special out of it and certainly not worth the $$$

I will not be returning. There are so many better places that have better options and better customer service than this place. I wanted to try it for the longest and it's sad it wasn't what I expected. Do...
