As a native New Yorker in Los Angeles California, there are a few things I've come to grips with, the transit isn't rapid so I need a car, Szechuan Chinese food is hard to find here, and supposedly, pizza can never taste "good" here because of the difference in water. Lol. I swear I've heard it all, one guy said his Dad flys either the water or dough he uses (can't remember which) in his pizzerias from New York to L.A. A few years ago I was having one of my "L.A. sucks, I wanna go home!" tantrums. I mentioned to my cousin that if I could just simply get a slice of pizza, I'd be okay. She suggested a pizza place across the street. I was ready to explain in my nasty "NYC is better than Everything" tone that this place could never accommodate my pallet when she said the name of the restaurant was Mulberry Street Pizza. I'M FROM THE LOWER EAST SIDE OF MANHATTAN! MULBERRY ST. IS PART OF MY HERITAGE!!! I haven't paid for pizza from another place since ❤️ Recently I found out that there are multiple locations and this week I visited this location on Ventura blvd. Fransisco was my pizzaiolo (or maybe simply a great host). We had an awesome conversation while I waited for my order to be ready. I told him my Snotty NYer Mulberry Pizza Story, he gave me the concise history on how the Pizzerias came about and the growth of the business. Fransisco was able to have great conversation with me while greeting customers, packing orders, and taking new ones. No one seemed to feel neglected. The vibe was laid back with a smell that reminded me of home. When you're in L.A. from NYC and you're feeling homesick, or if you just want to know what a REAL slice of pizza tastes like without the plane flight, Mulberry Street Pizza is the only place I've found that hits me like the real thing. The price of a plain slice seems high to me and if pepperoni or any other topping is what you need, be prepared to pay a pretty penny, but in times of need or times of financial stability, an extra buck is nothing compared to a trip to the doctor for depression or a red eye to JFK. Mulberry Street Pizza is family friendly and as I left I asked permission to snap a shot of a picture perfect father and daughter enjoying a couple of slices in the shade on a hot day utilizing the cute and quaint outdoor seating. Pizza makes people happy! Mulberry Street Pizza takes happy to the next level 😊😁😉 A+++++++++ from me,...
Read moreI feel like the longer I live in Los Angeles, the more times I discover a new favorite pizza place. For years OVE held that crown for me, but since moving to Encino, I’ve completely fallen in love with Mulberry Street.
They make themselves specialists. They take chances with variations, but they also know exactly what they do best — and they do it incredibly well. When it comes to the staples of pizza, pepperoni and cheese, nobody does it better. Their super thick Sicilian style is the one everyone talks about, and with good reason.
I’ve come in with my girlfriend, brought my kid, and even stopped by alone more times than I can count. Just today, I jogged over, picked up a pizza, and speed-walked home to feel a little better about eating it all myself. That’s how much I crave it.
The staff makes it even better. I forget his name, but one of the guys — maybe the owner or manager — always treats me and my family so well. Today he even slipped me a free cookie when I forgot to order one. The place has a warm, neighborhood feel: there’s usually a game on, people are smiling, saying hi. That isn’t always the norm these days, but here it feels natural.
Mulberry Street is the only pizza I crave in LA besides OVE. And while nothing will replace my all-time favorite back east, Freddy and Peppers on the Upper West Side, this place comes pretty close.
If you’re looking for a new spot, I’m telling you — this will pretty quickly become your go-to. And yes, don’t skip the cookies. They’re the kind you think about in the middle...
