Disappointed and Concerned – A Warning to Fellow Diners

The restaurant staff were friendly and professional, which I appreciated. However, the overall experience was deeply disappointing and ultimately, dangerous to my health.

When I first sat down, I noticed a fly buzzing around. I let it go, thinking it was no big deal. But by the end of my meal, I was being swarmed and bitten by what I can only describe as large horse flies. This is clearly not a service issue but a serious hygiene and sanitation concern. I spoke with a manager who, unfortunately, dismissed it entirely and offered no resolution.

The next day, I came down with a severe case of dysentery. I called the restaurant and not only was I met with denial, but I was accused of lying. I have documentation of my illness and have reported it to the health department and from what I’ve seen in their past reviews , I’m not the first person to raise concerns like this.

As someone who cooks with and is closely connected to chefs like Beth Aretsky, Aretsky Patroon, and the late Anthony Bourdain, I know the difference between an off night and a fundamental problem. Unfortunately, this was the latter. A restaurant’s integrity is tested not when things go right, but when something goes wrong and in this case, they failed.

I sincerely hope they take action before someone else ends...

This was our first time coming here, and we were excited to try this place out. After looking at the menu inside the restaurant, we asked the host if it was okay to sit anywhere in their outdoor seating area and he said yes. so we thought the staff knew we were there to dine. At first, we chose a table that was a bit far from the entrance of the restaurant, and after waiting around 10 mins with no one coming to check on us, we decided to move up and find a table closer to the front door of the restaurant. We were in clear view of the staff and even made eye contact a couple of times. After waiting another 10 mins, we were starting to wonder if we had to go back inside to place our order. I can’t believe this spot did not have a line out the door! Came here with my sister for her bday. It’s her go to spot bc she used to live down the street. The fish was so fresh and delishious! The rolls were amazing. Not heavy on the rice, perfectly full of flavor, no need for any soy sauce or any sauce. We had spicy Alaska roll, yuzu scallop roll, yuzu yellowtail. Along with short ribs, salmon collar, mixed tempura, shishito peppers. All the regular apps. Everything was fire! I live in Redondo beach and I will be driving back up to Sushi Ai again.
