Wow I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed Tara’s before - it’s my very favorite restaurant in all of Los Angeles. Oh my gosh, you guys, it is SO SO SO GOOD ALL THE TIME. We’ve been coming here for like 18 years - we had our bachelor and bachelorette party here and just had our wedding anniversary dinner here. During the pandemic it was our prime takeout spot.
The food has always been delicious. We are vegan and we especially like the vegan version of the vegetable korma, plus garlic tofu, jogi curry, aloo gobi, the vegetable momos, lentil soups, jackfruit curry. The garlic naan and any of the breads are spectacular (don’t tell the vegan police; it’s so good I cheat there). Honestly everything we’ve ever tried has been great - I recommend getting the thali dish that comes with a bunch of stuff (including the achar, the spicy pickled mix, which is delectable even to someone like me who doesn’t tolerate spicy food well). The deserts and drinks are nice too - the deserts aren’t vegan but I’ve had little nibbles from other people’s gulab jamun and rice pudding and they’re delicious.
I’ve never had food like this anywhere else (admittedly I’ve been to very few Nepalese restaurants.) For anyone who is wondering, it’s kind of like Indian food, but the spices are different and the overall vibe is different - creamier, easier for me to digest, less oily, more savory and herbal, maybe more delicate? Just my take in comparison to the Indian food I’ve had.)
The people are also always awesome, which I think is because Tara herself is such a sweetheart. She’s always warm, friendly, with a sense of profound benevolence. She clearly promotes a good work environment. Also they’re kind and accommodating about food allergies.
Ambiance and lack of restaurant odors means a lot to me when I eat out because I’m sensitive to those things. The vibe at Tara’s is fantastic - dim lights, comforting textures and images, nice wooden tables, and it’s always clean. I always feel welcomed and like I can relax there. My baby also loves it and is fascinated by the little garden area with prayer flags and lights out front.
Enjoy your time at Tara’s! And I heard that someday Tara might do cooking classes, which I would be SO psyched to take because if I could cook like her restaurant does I would eat incredibly well for the...

Read moreI come here all the time and frequently order takeout as well.
FOOD: The food is excellent! I've never been to the Himalayas so i can't say if it's "authentic" or not, but it's definitely delicious ! My usuals are: Lamb Biryani, Yak Chili, Paneer Masala, Okra and Veg Biryani. All of which are flavorful, high quality and unique (minus the paneer which is the same it is everywhere but still excellent).
The main difference between the biryani here and your typical Indian biryani is that there's has slightly different spices, way more tomato and is a little more saucy.
The Yak Chili is a unique dish. The pieces of meat are crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside.
They can also make the food spicy if you ask for it, but be warned: when you ask for spicy they DELIVER.
DRINKS: They do service alcohol and have a variety of beer and cocktails. The cocktails are reasonable and taste pretty good.
SERVICE: Not the best. It's a very popular restaurant so they're usually pretty busy. I've spent over 20 minutes waiting for my waiter to return after handing my table menus and over 30 minutes for food before.
That being said, the food is definitely worth the wait, but I prefer ordering takeout or delivery as opposed...
