El Acapulco isn't close to home, but every once in a while you want a different Mexican restaurant for dinner. Such is the case last Friday when we wanted a break from the several Mexican eateries close to home. A 20 minute drive to Preston Highway and there we were.

We've been here several times before and have never been disappointed. On this particular Friday we were seated immediately and started perusing the menu. El Acapulco has a very sizable menu with vegetarian and meat-o-saurus options ad-infinitum.

On previous visits I've had enchiladas of some sort and this time just. plain. tacos sounded good. My eyes spotted the Quesa-Tacos and I was intrigued. Melted cheese between corn tortillas, then filled with a protein and covered with cilantro and onion?!?!? SOUNDS SUPERB. My selections were birria, chorizo, and carne asada. More on that later.

El Acapulco is much larger inside than it appears to be on the outside. I don't know what it was before it became El Acapulco, but it's huge! Open ceiling with exposed rafters give it a very open feel. There are a number of screen scattered around the with current news playing, and the background music isn't overwhelming. The staff is busy hustling, 100% of the time. It's always been clean and well-maintained.

About ten minutes later our food arrived. I anxiously awaited my Quesa-Tacos and you can see by my photo that I was not disappointed! I've eaten a lot of tacos in a lot of restaurants, but these were, hands-down, some of the absolute best. The tortillas appeared to be slightly grilled on each side to melt the cheese between the layers...and It. Was. Amazeballs.

When I was done I was kinda sad that they were gone. I was at once happy and sad. That doesn't happen too often.

I'm the kind of person who finds one thing he REALLY likes at a restaurant and largely stays with it. I think the Quesa-Tacos and I are going to be come really...

We were looking forward to actually going into a restaurant for a meal— unfortunately this was not the place

It helps if the staff understands English since not all people speak Spanish. We sat and chips were brought immediately… then we wait and wait and wait for someone to take our drink order because their hot salsa has a punch

We placed our order and things just worsened from their. My order was completely wrong as they had slathered cheese sauce all over my burritos— I had ordered the green sauce on the side… that of course didn’t happen. Instead of the waitress setting our food down and without even giving us eye contact she walked away.

Once again I waited and waited my date was waiting for me to get my order settled before eating— after 10 mins I told him to start eating as I went in search of help. Unfortunately that green sauce took another 5 minutes

Now for the food— my suggestion is shorten the list of food and focus on those items to perfect because the beans rice and even the beef and chicken in my burrito were bland .. literally no taste (and no I don’t have COVID… this I know because of the salsa) there was just no taste no flavor no nothing

Then to add insult to injury my dates Tilapia was like jerky— he said it had a gritty taste as if someone dropped it in the grill then picked it up and served it

Now you’d think with all that is wrong that I might be offered monies off sense I didn’t want their salty cheese sauce all over my burritos and I had to wait nearly 20 minutes for the green sauce…

I will NEVER...

Ordered over the phone for pickup to go the guy that answered was very nice but if you don't know what someone said ITS OK TO ASK! Would of saved me waisted gas and time and eating cold food! I ordered 2 extra sides of rice they forgot and I had to go up there when I went up there I found out he put me down for no Beans (hhhmmm wondered why it looked so empty) so I had to pay for my extra rice again and luckily by the end of the 20 min conversation I didn't have to use my google translate app cause the manager got frustrated and pretty much grabbed a bunch of rice and beans and rushed me out of the restaurant... Still no silverware still no napkins but after I stuffed my chicken wrap with warm rice it was tolerable to consume and not completely ice cold by the time I got back home after going to have my order corrected.... The guy that answered the phone was a total doll baby really sweet but totally LOST I just feel bad that this restaraunt is one of my favorite places and is actually has good prices but the language barrier is something they need to conquer before they can truly serve their community i'd say if you wanna eat here best thing to do is dine in.... You just point to what you want on the menu and they make you an awesome dish but again people if you need to ask what I said again then I will GLADLY repeat it or do my...

This was an amazing experience for us first timers. We got seated quickly. We got service immediately. Our waitress, she was the sweetest and kindest person. So personable and friendly. The chips and salsa were fabulous. The queso picante was our favorite. We all tried something different and we all loved our food. My son said "this is the best taco I've ever had". And for graduating kindergarten, our sweet waitress brought him a dessert (on the house). I was stunned and so thankful for that kind gesture. She made his day. In the end, for a family of 4, this was also very affordable. We don't go out much anymore so this was a treat! We will be coming back in the near future.

I've eaten here many times. When El Acapulco is good, it is very good, but sometimes it is just "ok". The descriptive word for El Acapulco is "inconsistent". Food servings on dishes with vegetables for example may vary in amount from one visit to the next, and while service is usually good, if there is a large party at a table then that party will get the attention, while smaller tables may feel somewhat forgotten. It is not a bad restaurant, but it has the potential, unrealized to the point of this writing, to be outstanding.
