The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) frequently challenges anti-panhandling ordinances, arguing they violate the First Amendment's protection of free speech. Many of these ordinances, often disguised as public safety measures, are deemed unconstitutional for restricting the content of speech or targeting specific groups. Here's a more detailed breakdown: Key Arguments in ACLU Lawsuits: Free Speech: The ACLU argues that panhandling, which involves asking for money, is a form of speech protected by the First Amendment. Content-Based Restrictions: Laws that specifically target panhandling or restrict it based on the content of the speech (asking for money) are often considered unconstitutional. Public Safety as a Pretext: The ACLU frequently challenges ordinances that claim to be based on public safety concerns but are, in reality, designed to suppress panhandling and remove people experiencing homelessness from public spaces. Discrimination: In some cases, the ACLU highlights the discriminatory impact of panhandling laws, noting that they disproportionately affect people of color and those experiencing homelessness. Examples of ACLU Involvement: Albuquerque, New Mexico: The ACLU of New Mexico successfully challenged an ordinance that restricted panhandling, arguing it violated the First Amendment. Illinois: The ACLU of Illinois fought an ordinance prohibiting panhandling in public streets and medians, resulting in a federal court declaring the law unconstitutional. Slidell, Louisiana: The ACLU of Louisiana sued the city of Slidell over an ordinance requiring panhandlers to register with the police, leading to a temporary halt in enforcement while the ordinance's legality was being reviewed. Worcester, Massachusetts: The ACLU of Massachusetts challenged two anti-panhandling ordinances, arguing they violated the right to solicit donations in public, and a federal judge eventually struck them down. Greeley, Colorado: The ACLU of Colorado successfully challenged a "median ban" that targeted panhandlers, leading the city to agree to stop enforcing the ban. Sacramento, California: The ACLU Foundation of Northern California and Legal Services of Northern California filed a lawsuit against an ordinance that restricts panhandling, arguing it violates First Amendment rights. Overall, the ACLU's litigation on panhandling demonstrates a commitment to defending the First Amendment rights of individuals, particularly those who are vulnerable and marginalized, by challenging laws that restrict their ability to express themselves in...
Read moreFinally made it to Home Cookin' Cafe yesterday, and it was great! I'll admit I've been biased against it based only on the past businesses that have been in that space.
But this diner has the potential to be special for our community. It's got a stark, basic, but still homey feel to it that reminds you of a place you'd find along a roadside driving thru a small town. Red & white checkered tablecloths on a selection of nicely organized two- and four-tops. Booth seating along the back wall.
I had the $7 biscuits & gravy w/ a side of eggs. Eggs were harder than I prefer, they kindly offered to replace them. The rest of the meal was perfect. Excellent diner coffee. Green chili on my partner's meal was great, as well. My buddy heard that the breakfast chicken-fried steak w/ gravy and eggs is ridiculous, but I didn't get to try it this time.
Best part was the service. There were only about three tables and a couple people eating at the counter when we walked in at 9:45am. They had two servers, one person in the kitchen, and another who seemed to be in a flex position. It took a couple of minutes for them to seat us because they were engaged in conversations with two of the tables. One could choose to be annoyed, but it was nice to see. They did the same with us, and most every other table in there while we ate. On two occasions I saw medical staff from the surrounding buildings come in to eat at the counter (re-purposed bar from the previous establishments).
Run - don't walk - to this place. It checks the boxes for "not pretentious," "old school," and "quality." You won't be disappointed with the experience.
Located in the Centennial Center alongside Loco Hermanos, King Dumpling and...
Read moreFinally a good brunch place in Louisville!! This town honestly leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to legit breakfast/brunch options, which is one of my favorite weekend activities with family and friends. When we saw a new place was opening I knew we'd have to go check it out. I'm so glad we did. The menu offers all the things you'd hope for in a breakfast Cafe, as well as many non breakfast food options for when your just not feeling breakfast. The coffee was good (I was offered refills). The food was absolutely delicious. We tried the traditional eggs benedict and the chicken fried steak. They have some brunch cocktails available as well. The Bloody mary was tasty. Service was great. Food was great. Menu was great. Price was great. All around great experience. We're going to tell all our local pals and be back soon with family! Welcome to Louisville Home Cookin Cafe! We're glad you're here! Suggestion - the acoustics of the space amplify sound. The kitchen was playing music and there was separate music playing in the dining area - they were blending together making for some awkward...
