Being an expatriated New Yorker, trying to find a decent, let alone a good bagel shop here in PA is like trying to find an authentic Amish restaurant on the lower East Side ... virtually impossible!
Well, my next excursion to SoHo will include looking for said Amish digs. 3 Men & a Bagel are about as close to New York bagels as you're gonna get here in the Lehigh Valley. The memories and the smells of visiting my old haunts in the Big Apple are all brought back quite vividly when entering the store.
You are immediately enveloped in the wonderfully pungent aroma of fresh cooked bagels along with the delightfully decadent wafts of bacon that permeate the premises. They have a wonderful variety of bagels to choose from that include some of the "standards" (i.e. onion, everything, cinnamon raisin) to go along with some of the "not so standard" (i.e. Energy, jalapeño and chocolate chip). They also have a good assortment of homemade cream cheese to purchase along with your bagels.
Now, I'm not sure if they're boiling or baking their bagels, however, they do have a nice crunch to the outside accompanied by a soft textured interior that is quite flavorful. This is very akin to the boiling process that I'm so used to.
Now I gave them 4 stars out of 5 for the following reason(s):
They "nuke" their eggs instead of cooking them on a flat grill in true NY fashion. This tends to leave the eggs slightly green on occasion AND you can't get 'em over easy or over medium if you wanted. They do the same with their bacon. Now, while it is Boarshead brand they could be a little more generous with their portions on their breakfast sandwiches. I believe that it's 3 pieces for a regular portion and 5 for a double (yes that seems odd). The service could be a little faster. Perhaps this is just the "New Yorker" in me but I'm a firm believer in "get in, get out" especially during breakfast ordering.
Other than those issues, this place is great for breakfast and lunch or just to stop in and pick up a dozen with a pound or two of cream cheese for that lazy Sunday morning...
Read moreBefore I say anything, the food is great! However the service i recieved as a first time customer was uncomfortable and a bit disrespectful. I watched a woman behind the counter kindly greet and take at least 3 customers order. As I approached the register to pay for my order, this woman walked away from the register and avoided me, Even when I greeted this woman with a huge smile and Good morning she did not acknowledge me. I waited there as I watched her look for other things to do besides help me. She made no eye contact and didnt show any welcoming customer service. So a nice young lady noticed I was standing there so she stopped making the food and took my order. I am never the one to call discrimination however walking into this prodominantly white resturant, I felt very out of place and frowned upon. I feel as though my presence couldve been acknowledged due to that fact I am putting my money into this company. Many may not understand how it feels but I have worked in resturants and it's common coutersy to acknowledge your paying customers. I will not return and do not reccommend. This was a bit hurtful and embarrassing. Thank you to the yong lady who stopped making the food to take me order as the old lady who was taking the orders shunned...
Read moreWe placed an order online. When we arrived there was no way to distinguish us from the long line of customers waiting to place an order. When we informed someone that we were there to pick up an order she rolled her eyes and gave us our food. After we checked our food we noticed that they did not give us the correct muffins. We ordered chocolate chocolate chip and they gave us chocolate chip. When we informed them of this she checked the receipt and pointed to it and said chocolate chip insinuating they gave us what we ordered. The receipt clearly states chocolate chocolate chip. She did proceed to give us what we were asking for, but she was very unkind about it.
This is very disappointing. We used to come here all the time because we lived close and everyone was always kind no matter how busy they were. My family loves their food. I decided to make the trip from my new house today, about 40 min round trip, and I am very unhappy with the way we...
