I used to go to Specks all of the time, it was a good place, but I moved out of Collegeville about a year and a half ago and hadn't been back since today. My friend and I walked in, I was not wearing a mask. Immediately the kid behind the counter told me to put one on, so I did (I have asthma and cannot really wear a mask for long without negative side effects, it would have done no ill to anyone had he just ignored it like most every other business does, but I just complied for sake of keeping the peace). My friend began to order his food, then I looked around the store; All of the tables were taped off as if a murder scene had just happened. I asked the staff, "are we really not allowed to eat inside?" They replied "no you're not". At that moment I walked right out, my friend cancelled his order and followed me.
"No dine in orders" were lifted by the governor over a month ago, why are you continuing to enforce them in your business? You have how many tables and chairs with paying customers willing to sit at them to make you money, yet you want to keep them empty?
I can only assume that the reason you are roping off your dine in area is to "protect people from covid-19" even though restrictions were lifted over 30 days ago. If you have been paying attention to anything other than CNN or MSNBC, you would be well aware that this covid mitigation effort has been no more than a coup that has destroyed the American economy (especially the restaurant industry) and the social construct as a whole.
The constant fear mongering by our government and the media has been an act of destruction and disgrace to our country, yet you continue to push their narrative even further than you are required to. If you are willing to adhere to authoritarian conditions that Governor Wolf has laid out for our state, then I am unwilling to give you my business, and I am actively interested in deterring other people from giving you their business.
After leaving Speck's, we went to Moccia's Train Stop, where we were NOT rudely confronted by staff about not wearing a mask as soon as we walked in. They simply didn't acknowledge it. We were welcomed with open arms and promptly seated and given a wonderful dining experience with no issues.
Most other restaurants are waking up to the fact that most of their customers are disinterested in living in fear and also realizing the fact that breathing in the waste of your own lungs because of a mask mandate is not good for anyone's health. If you believe that breathing in your own carbon dioxide is good for the health of you and others around you, I have a piece of Pennsylvania ocean front property to sell you, I'll throw the golden gate in free.
Your industry is under attack by your state and federal governments, yet you are being overly compliant while other people in your industry are being courageous and standing up for their rights and freedoms. I vote for courage over cowardice any day of the week. I am voting with my dollars, so are millions of other Americans. I voted for your competitor today. You will either get with it or go out...
Read moreWe were heading out for a day trip and saw we'd be passing by Speck's, so a perfect time to give it a shot at lunch. While a little out of the way for us, it's a small, near little retro place. Extremely simple interior, but a fairly extensive menu. Very much what you'd think of for an old-school drive-in. They're known for the chicken, so start there. We ordered four pieces of chicken, a hot dog, a small cheesesteak, french fries, and a small soda. I've heard of broasted chicken and now take this as the chance to really see what it meant. Simplified, it's chicken that's fried in a pressure cooker (though there's more to it.) Chicken was a half chicken: breast, wing (both sections), thigh, and drumsticks. There's a very thin/limited coating, but it's got a good crunch and flavor. Don't expect a heavily breaded/battered fried chicken. It's just barely they're, light, and simple. My wife had the hotdog. It appeared small from how it was wrapped, but it's split in half and griddle fried on a roll, not a standard hot dog bun. We actually like making the split, griddled hot dogs at home. Extremely simple and fine (she ordered it plain.) I also got a small cheesesteak with fried onions since some reviews I saw mentioned it. Again, simple, but good. Cheese on the bottom, good, soft roll, nice size for a small, meat was finely chopped with the onions finely diced and incorporated (the way I like it.) Fries were your basic crinkle-cut with q crispy exterior and fluffy interior. Birch beer was at the fountain so I went with that. For simple, delicious food, I'd definitely recommend this place. Price was good (just about $20 for our order), service and as quick, and...
Read moreFirst of all, I want to say that I'm giving Specks 5 stars for what it is....a family owned diner that excels at its specialty...fried chicken and comfort food fixins'. This was my first time trying Specks after living in the Harleysville area for 15 years. In all that time, I have not found anything comparable for this type of restaurant/food. There are great diners in the area, but this place specializes in fried chicken and has a smaller menu than a typical diner, which I actually love because they do what they do and it's GOOD! When I walked into Specks, I noticed right away that it was very clean and organized....even the big windows were clean and not streaky or spotty. The floor was swept, the tables were clean and not sticky (like I've experienced in other diners that get alot of business). The decor was true to the image that Specks projects, with yellows, oranges, and browns. The lighting was cool and nostalgic. I also noticed, that even though they are frying food, there was no "old grease" smell. It smelled like fresh fried chicken. The food was yummy yummy!!! and it was ready for us lickety split in about 3 minutes. The chicken was fresh, the sides (mashed potatoes, potato salad, macaroni salad, and cole slaw...yep, we ordered them all!) were all very good with a pennsylvania dutch flavor, and they had birch beer at the soda fountain which was another nostalgic touch for me. We "mmmmm"ed through our whole meal and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. Thank you Specks, for a wonderful meal in a clean, comfortable, and cool environment on a cold winter night. We...
