How could you possibly top great pizza and service? Oh yeah - amazing beer! Lucille's is hands down one of Madison's best pizza places. It's not often that my wife and I can have a date out where it's just the two of us; so when we go downtown we'll often consider treating ourselves to a pizza date night at Lucille's - especially during the holidays when they do "Miracle on King Street" and transform into a Christmas-themed pop-up cocktail bar. However, even if it's not for a dinner date we'll more often than not make an effort to dine there with our little ones. Honestly for me it's one of the best places in Madison, and I love the ambiance in there. For starter's their gourmet pizzas are delicious. But what really separates Lucille's from most pizza places is their beer selection. I don't know who manages their beer selection, but they have a great rotating tap of around two dozen craft beers and you'll often be delighted to find awesome rare releases like Surly Darkness there as well - which if you don't know about... well then you're missing out. Anyway, good beer plus delicious pizza is always a winning combination, but the real reason we come back to Lucille's time and time again is the outstanding service we always get there. I've been to a lot of restaurants, but Lucille's stands out in my mind as a cut above. I think the best example I can provide of this is once when we ordered a specialty pie and got half way through eating it when we realized it was missing one of the main toppings it was supposed to have. We politely mentioned this small oversight to our waiter and he promptly ordered us up a new pizza (which was more than satisfactory), but when we got our bill we saw that unbeknownst to us, he had comped us for the pizzas. I don't know if that's a restaurant policy of if Lucille's just empowers their staff to ensure their customers have great experiences, but it worked. I mean not only did we tip him as if the pizza had been on the bill, but we added a little extra; and it's certainly a story we've shared with numerous friends. So in summary if you've got friends or family in town or are just looking for a great place to eat in Madison, I highly recommend Lucille's. You can't beat the level of service you'll get there; and the pizza and beer are like no pairing you'll find anywhere else in the area.

Lucille totally delivered on the fun holiday drink menu and decorated atmosphere we were seeking. Drinks (holiday menu choices) and appetizer (chicken tinga tostada) tasted great, and the topping of the umami pizza was rich and delicious. However, there were also issues with the food and drinks. We went specifically for the mulled wine, and we were told the machine that heats it was not functioning right and we would have to wait 20 minutes. While we appreciated the honesty, it was disappointing - and baffling...how does it take 20 minutes to heat? We did like our alternate choices. The gluten free pizza crust we had to order due to a sensitivity in our group was tasteless and tough. Gluten free crusts, in my opinion, are rarely good, but this one was BAD. Even though the appetizer and pizza topping was good, service was super slow and the food was beyond "not hot" and was almost "getting cold" when it arrived. We didn't know they needed us to move so a band could set up where we were seated, and we appreciated someone was finally honest and asked if we would move...but for about 20 mintues, one server was SO obnoxious in trying to get us to move after we finished eating but were still enjoying a final drink. She took away chairs and kept trying to take away glasses and napkins we were still using. Being asked nicely to move was good, but it was annoying to have someone try to take away your full water glass or almost-but-not-yet-gone drink again and again whenever you took your hand off of it!

Update since my previous review. We were at Lucille last night with friends and I was disappointed with the service and my entree pizza. Service wise, this is based on the past two visits. I think they need to train their staff better. Last night any necessary items we got were because we had to ask for them. For insurance, we had to ask for plates for both the appetizers and the entrees. Not sure how they expected us to eat/share them without plates. Although we all had bar drinks, we asked for some additional water and the waitress acted like it was such a hassle to get is another bottle of water. I know it's hard to get staff now, but the attitudes have just been really bad on our last two visits here. Lastly, I ordered The Queen which is a pretty basic pizza. Much like a Margarita pizza except it is also supposed to have prosciutto. When it arrived, it was just sauce and cheese, no prosciutto. There were a couple of small tidbits of basil, but not basil leaves as you would normally expect at this price point. Lucille used to be my favorite restaurant in Madison, but we're going to give it a break now as it's just not worth it to get poor service and food. I will note that the others in our party had quality food so it's not everything.

Lucille is an upscale pizza place. Great ambiance and truly unique pizzas. We started off with cheese curds and taco chips with salsa. Both were delicious. The cheese curds were up to Wisconsin standards! We shared 3 pizzas, the Umami, the Weekender and the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean was the hands down favorite. If you don't like the olives you can omit them or pick them off. The Weekender is a deep dish steel pan pizza that I really liked and was very filling too! Sausage topping had some spice but was very tasty. The Umami just seemed a bit lacking. Not enough toppings or sauce. It was our least favorite. Lucille was exceptional at meeting our gluten/dairy free needs! We ordered the Caribbean Chickpea Curry Bowl and they offered to modify the jalapeno crema sauce to make it Gluten & dairy free! (No extra charge). They even asked if anyone at our table had any food alergies before we even mentioned it. Our server Josephine was very busy, but she made time for us which was nice! She took good care of us! To top things off, we were celebrating a birthday and did get offered a free desert choice. The Strawberry Rhubard Crisp with ice cream was delicious!

When I say wow, I mean WOW! I was so excited to get a reservation here for Saturday night and could not wait to try both the Wood Fire and the Detroit Style deep dish. We started with Empanadas and they were impeccable! So light and tasty, and the sauce was drinkable, I highly recommend you try these! For pizza, we got the Portugal the Pan and the Umami pie. The pizzas were quite different but incredibly tasty, yet light and filling. One thing I always get worried about when ordering pizza is how greasy it will be and how i’ll feel after. At Lucille’s, the pizza is light and filling but not greasy! Both these pizzas were delicious beyond belief! The drink pictured is “Gold on the Ceiling”. It was the best rum-punch style drink to sip on for the night. Can’t wait to bring my family back and get another taste of this amazing atmosphere and food! UPDATE: Went here again to catch up with friends and had a fantastic experience. The place is so warm and cozy with all of their holiday decorations. The new pizza El Cocavi is seriously INCREDIBLE. I highly recommend this pie as it’s unique and so flavorful and tasty.

My friends and I have loved this place for the past 5 years, the atmosphere is amazing as well as the food and drinks. However, my last experience here was too disappointing to let it slide as I want this place to flourish like it used to. Let me start with saying that drinks at 16-17$ are way too expensive. I know prices are getting more expensive everywhere but a 4-5$ increase?!? and I would be okay with it if the quality was still maintained. I learned from my last time at lucille that some of those 17$ drinks are from TAP (pink chimney pictured here) . They do not even make them by hand. 17$ for a drink from tap is insane, I felt I was being ripped off. The atmosphere there has also been lacking. I’ve had very strange experiences lately with the servers apart from being rude (not saying this will always be your experience) but just watch out. My friends actually encouraged me to write this review because we are all sad that such a classic place to Madison’s square is really letting all of us down and we hope these kind of things can be addressed in the future.
